Review for Backyard Cafe – Extremely Unprofessional and Disappointing

I don’t usually write negative reviews, but our experience with Backyard Cafe was completely unacceptable. We confirmed a reservation in February 3, 2025 for a party of 16 on April 13, 2025 @7pm. I even spoke with the manager Ashona two days before, on April 11 @ 11:02pm, to reconfirm everything. Please note that this would have been my 4th time traveling to Guyana and going to Backyard Cafe. Last year I took a group of 12, 2 yrs prior I took another large group of 12-14 persons. We always had a great experience. But… not this time.

Despite all of that, we showed up on April 13 to find that our reservation had been canceled without any notice. There was no phone call, no email—nothing. To make matters worse, the owner Delvin never apologized, even after I gave him ample time and opportunity to respond. There was no explanation, no accountability, and no attempt to make things right. He actually told our tour guide Jamal Thomas that he took another job. He didn’t even reach out to the tour guide to let him know about the cancellation.

This level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable, especially when you’re dealing with a large group and making plans far in advance. We were left scrambling at the last minute because of their negligence. We took taxi’s to get to location and struggled to find taxi’s to take us to another restaurant. I strongly discourage anyone from relying on this place for group events or important occasions.

Avoid the hassle—Backyard Cafe is not worth it as I met other folks that had the same dissatisfaction with Delvin and the...

I honestly wish I could have given zero stars. We called multiple times to figure out reservations since we are visiting from NY and heard great things about the place. We were told that reservations are to be made a day in advance and our food choice submitted. We booked a reservation for Thursday August 12th at 7pm (which we confirmed multiple times) and we even submitted our menu on time (as per the person we spoke to). After we submitted our menu we confirmed again that our reservations were set. We got a text in the morning of August 12th saying that our reservation was automatically cancelled because another group was prioritized! They did not have the decency to even call. They confirmed our reservations multiple times last night and this is how you do business? We cancelled multiple plans to be there but it seems as though no one values your time. Horrible experience and it seems as though people with no fundamentals on how to conduct business works here and runs the place. We were so excited to come here but the negative attitude and horrible way of doing business just emanates bad energy. Save your money and your time. There are other places that would appreciate your business and treat you as family! I can only imagine how the owner treats Local people trying...

Our experience at Backyard Cafe was nothing short of amazing for both myself and my family. From the moment we arrived, the level of care and attention provided by the head chef and his assistant stood out. They maintained open communication throughout the evening to ensure our specialized requests were met with precision and care.

The entire evening flowed smoothly without a single hiccup. The food arrived hot, flavorful, and generously portioned—more than enough to satisfy everyone at the table. The chef not only accommodated our needs but truly elevated the experience with his thoughtful service and exceptional culinary skills.

If you want to make your experience here truly special, we recommend planning your menu ahead of time. Incorporate a mix of authentic Guyanese-style dishes alongside your favorite homestyle meals—the chef is more than capable of bringing your vision to life.

Overall, it was a fantastic evening, made even more memorable by the chef’s personal touch. We highly recommend Backyard Cafe for anyone looking for a warm, tailored...

I went there based on good reviews. I had mixed experience. The lady working lacked basic customer service skills. I entered the restaurant and she was behind the bar - I sat myself down and she just stood there. No welcome, no hello, no bringing the MENU to the customer who came to dine and pay for it. Just speaks to the wider cultural problem in the country where service employees have no incentive to perform better as their ‘service charge’ is already guaranteed. So she had no incentive to greet the customer, smile and be proactive. On the positive side, the food was very good. I had Grilled Snapper and rosemary potatoes. The fish was really well done, soft and had tasty dressing. The spicy sauce on the side was also very good. Another note on service - the lady never came back to ask if everything was ok and if I wanted anything else. She just couldn’t be bothered was my main takeaway. And mind that I was the only customer there the entire time so it’s not like she was overly busy! Like all or most places in GT, it’s cash only so be prepared.
