SCHOOL BUS DINER — Restaurant in Dunakeszi járás

Eating burgers in Hungary is very much a hit or miss proposition, with the emphasis on miss. Part of the problem is that many Hungarians' model for a hamburger is derived from McDonald's. As a result, most hamburger shops in this country seem to want to hide the poor quality and taste of their meat by hiding it beneath a plethora of spicy toppings and a bun that's at least a third too large for the amount of meat.

In Brooklyn where I grew up, a hamburger was all about the meat. Anything added beyond the meat and the minimal bun was there to enhance the flavor of the meat, not obscure it.

And so I wasn't sure what to expect at the School Bus Diner. On their website they emphasize the quality of their Angus beef. The extra toppings looked more appropriate. The bun appeared to be much closer to the right size. But until now, the only burger I had eaten in Hungary that I considered great could only be found at Pesti Burger in Budapest, which sadly no longer exists.

School Bus Diner did not disappoint. With my first bite of the Boston BBQ burger I knew I had found my new go-to place for having a great burger. The meat lived up to its advertisement and was not overcooked. The bun did its job without getting in the way. The cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce complemented the flavor of the meat, allowing it to maintain its starring role. The whole experience almost brought a tear to my eye. The sweet potato fries and coleslaw made nice accompaniments.

Beverages range from syrups and lemonades to six variations of fröccs (spritzer) to three kinds of milkshakes and a number of Feher Nyul craft beers (bottles), but no Coke and no Pepsi!

Dessert is limited to churros, Mexican sugared fried batter, and coffee. The milkshakes are listed as desserts, too, but in the US they are usually served alongside the burgers. Have it your way!

The service was great. The place is run by a fulltime chef and several students who wait the tables and tally your bill. The only table service is outdoors, and while theh atmosphere was very nice, you are sitting adjacent to what can be a heavily traveled road, depending on the time of day, and a busy railroad that includes freight trains. But for these burgers I will gladly put up with it. Take-out service is also available.

Our meal -- burgers, sides, extras, beverages, a coffee and one dessert for three people came out just north of 6000 HUF/person, or about $18 at the current exchange rate. A 10% tip is included in the bill. Parking spaces are provided.

Oh, and by the way, May 28 is National Hamburger...

The burgers are really good. The meat is perfect, juicy but not watery. The bun is super fresh and soft. But the regular hamburger feels too basic, the tex-mex is much better. I also didn't like the sweet potato fries, they were too dry and had a strange taste, but maybe this is just my preference. The place is a bit overpriced in my opinion considering the location and overall street food vibe. I understand that the burgers here are made with premium meat but the fries and beverages could be cheaper (or the portions could be bigger). The lemonades were warm, and it was a bit of disappointment. Also several tables don't have any shade, so I would not recommend coming here...

Egy hónapja voltunk. Régebb óta készültünk ide, mert tetszett a hely, jókat írtak róla. Aztán eljöttünk, és mégsem akartam véleményezni. Kimaradt a Kaliforniai életérzés, vagy ha az ilyen, akkor az a baj. Első látogatásunk volt itt. Nagyon meleg volt, kevés az árnyék. Nagyjából megoldódott. Több termék alapanyaghiány miatt nem volt választható. Avokádó nem volt, a feleségem egyik kedvence... Ok választunk mást. Italt? Persze kérünk. Két fajta sör lett volna, amit szerettem volna megkóstolni, ezért is mentünk autó nélkül, hogy a kisfiam Ballagása után koccinthassunk. Ez a két fajta pont nem volt. Mást meg nem akartam. A többiek limonádéztak. A rendelésfelvételnél máshol szokatlan rugalmatlanságot tapasztaltam. Plusz tétel nem kérhető a burgerbe!? Csere? Talán. Végül a két kérdéses tételből egyik sem került bele. Az ételek lassan érkeztek, és nagyon nem egyszerre. Hatan voltunk. Szerintem nem sok. Én Pulled Porkos szendvicset kértem, többet vártam, de rendben volt. A fő probléma a többi hamburger hússal volt. Ennyire "rare"-t még sehol sem szolgáltak fel. Megértem én, hogy itt ilyen, de ezt jó lenne előre jelezni, mert nem mindenki rajongója az élőállat evésnek. Az első "élmény" után jeleztük, hogy a többit nem ilyenre szeretnénk. Onnan már egész kínos és kellemetlen volt a helyzet. Ettünk már ezt-azt sok helyen, dolgoztam vendéglátás "környékén", de egész mást szoktam meg, mindkét oldalon. Vendégpanasz kezelés kapcsán különösen. Összességében a minőséggel nem volt baj, a kivitelezés nem tetszett, de úgy alakult, hogy közülünk senki sem lett elégedett. Sajnos akkor itt semmi sem volt jó élmény. Az egy külön történet, hogy egy ilyen eset után szeretném-e külön "díjazni" a szolgáltatást. Egyébként is mindenhol szoktam, ahol úgy érzem,...
