This review concerns the restaurant alone. Great food, especially the local soups and stews. Very tasty. Probably unbeatable in the area - and I've tried a few others back in the day. Congrats to the chef!
There's a but - and it's true, unfortunately. Since it's not as populated as it used to be, they're hitting you for tips. If they were to ask for, say, a 15 - even an 18 per cent - tip at the end of the meal, it wouldn't even be so bad. I mean, be honest with me, I'll take care of you! But they're stealing, and every customer, especially groups, need to pay attention to the method.
First of all, since most soups and stews come in double format (individual bowl or shared pot), watch out that you're not being charged for both; I've recently had the experience of ordering two pots (as a group) and being charged for four pots. The explanation is: "oh, I though you meant 4 individual bowls!" At the price of 4 pots? Come on! So, if you're not noticing what you're ordering, you might get in trouble. Keep in mind what you've ordered, and also what the price per item was!
Second golden rule: they accept every popular currency in the area, but for foreign currency (EUR, USD, RON) they conduct their own conversion. I bet you already know what this means: that your money isn't as valuable as you thought it was. Well, it isn't. To these guys, 1 Euro equals easy 250-300 HUF. So if you're inclined to pay cash, don't! Actually, I'll do you one better: don't even tip in cash. Tell them to pull out the old card reader and swipe it. Watch the transaction as it goes, and write the tip at the end of the establishment's receipt copy.
The waiters are talented at getting you, especially if you're a foreigner. One brings you the check with extra items, the other one brings up a calculator to "make the conversion." If you're worried about the conversion, they're willing to give you a better rate (so you'll forget to count the items). If you're counting the items, they'll withdraw them from the bill, but then they keep the over-inflated conversion rate. One way or another, these guys are professionals. If you know the legends of tourists stripped for cash in Hungary, well, they're not entirely fake.
Again, great food. It's the people you got to...
Read moreExtremely disappointed of this place and its restaurant staff. On 13/08/23, we have stopped here, upon recommendations we had from various places. After we had to wait to be seated and nobody acknowledged us for 15 minutes- we were just ‘waived’ to get seated indoors, as outside was full. We sat alone on one of the available seats/table; for another 20 minutes all the waiters passed by us, serving all other tables and clients around; they even haven’t cleaned after who was on that table before us; even 2 tables were served that came in after us!! when we went twice to approach different staff, I was shouted at by an older lady, with shorter haircut( she refused to tell me her name at all times) and very defensively I was told that we have to wait for them to acknowledge us, to give us menus and to be spoken to- as they will come to us when they have time and in the order they wish. I wasn’t allowed to mention that they served everyone else; this lady-waiter continued to speak above me on a raised voice, attracting the attention of all her colleagues and all the other clients present at this restaurant!!! We were made to feel extremely embarrassed, shocked and ashamed to even be in that place!!!! The treatment that we had there it’s utterly unacceptable and no excuse can be given for that behaviour. We couldn’t have stayed there after this, so therefore we had to stand up and leave immediately. Everyone being client there just turned their heads in disbelief, and this unprofessional lady-waiter just waived her hands in air when she saw us leaving, and from what I could hear and understand on our way out, she mottled something down the line of…” don’t care about them… there plenty others who won’t care… if they say anything who’ll believe them”…!!!!!. I just would like to believe that the owners of this highly rated place will see this and take some sort of action, impeding others to experience anything similar to what we have...
Read moreA very bad experience. I had been here before, but I have never experienced anything like this. The waiter was in a constant rush, throwing the drinks on the table, and the food arrived extremely late (over an hour) and was very disappointing. The fish soup had barely any pieces of fish, the schnitzel was unsalted with meat so tough it was almost impossible to cut, the duck legs were tasteless, and for the fish fillet (where the menu stated two preparation options), it was simply brought fried, without even being asked which version we preferred – most likely because the waiter was in a hurry and exhausted. One portion of goulash soup was missing, but we couldn’t even manage to tell the waiter, as he was always too busy and didn’t seem to understand either English or Romanian. In the end, the missing soup still appeared on the bill. He offered to replace it with a dessert. When we said we would pay by card, he made it very clear that the tip had to be left in cash, not added to the bill, and even suggested that we could pay in RON or EUR if we didn’t have Forints. (This was very rude, especially after such poor service.) He also cleared plates without asking if everyone had finished eating. We were a group of 10 people, and two children were still eating when their plates were taken away. Prices are extremely high compared to the quality of both the food and the service. This used to be a good restaurant, but now I cannot...
