During our prep for our Iceland trip, we made it a point to pack various snacks and ingredients to self cater our meals when possible and snack throughout the day as we would rather spend time outside exploring instead of both wasting money at expensive restaurants.
However, on this particular day we had misjudged and we hadn't packed a proper lunch. On the drive from Hvollsvollur to Vik, stopping at multiple locations, we realized just how hungry we were as we approached Reynisfjara and there was nothing else in sight for a meal aside from the N1 which closed at 6pm. It was already near sunset around 7pm.
This restaurant happened to be exactly where we were going and saved the day for us. Not only was the food delicious, but the price was also more reasonable than I was expecting from the reviews. I think it depends what you get. The service was warm. The bathrooms clean. The design of the restaurant superb. We also chose a great time to go have dinner because it was around the time where most people were outside waiting for sunset. We dined from around 715 to 745 and we were off to Reynisfjara to enjoy the amazing sunset. On the walk back we saw the restaurant was packed.
We had the Lamb Soup, and Black Beach Burger that came with fries. Everything was...
Read moreA beautiful small cafe right at the parking lot of the famous Black Sand Beach. When we stopped in, it was very busy. A bit chaotic. We ordered a latte and a slice of the vegan mango cake. The vegan mango cake was delicious and was exciting to find a vegan treat in their baked good case. I am deducting a couple stars however because service was pretty sub par sadly. We never got our latte we ordered. We heard our order come up but it appeared another person in line grabbed the drink and walked off. My husband went up to the barista and said we never got it as it appeared someone accidentally grabbed our drink. And the barista said he would make us a new one. 10 minutes passed and he was making/handing out others orders and did not make me a new one. I returned another 10 minutes later kindly stating we never got our drink and we were basically ignored. After 20 minutes passed we left without ever getting our drink. The place is really nice and the food we had was good but the service was a bit chaotic. At the end of the day, it’s just a latte but we paid for one and never got one which is kind of a bummer. They only had 2 baristas working for a HUGE crowd of tourists so I felt they may need more...
Read moreThe only restaurant at the Black beach. Beware, it gets pretty crowded during lunch time on the weekdays due to busloads of tourists visiting the area. You probably won't be able to get a table unless you arrive an hour before or after 12-1pm. It's a free sitting arrangement.
The menu was listed on 1 or 2 pages. You'll find your typical american burger with fries and some Icelandic dishes, like lamb soup. Once you order, you'll be given a ticket number. At which the serving staff will call out once it's ready. You just need to respond so they can come and serve you the food. I mention this because the restaurant does get a bit loud, especially when there's a lot of customers- so just pay extra attention to hear your order.
I had one of their burgers along with hot cocoa. The cocoa was made from a dispensing machine, but it was warm welcome drink to fight against the cold, wet weather the day I was there. The food was alright and I didn't find anything that was particularly bad about it.
Overall, if you need a meal and are at the black beach, go for it. Just remember to note the peak hours and expect a lot of people if you visit...
