We recently had the misfortune of staying at the cottage guesthouse in Fjalladyrd, Iceland, and I feel compelled to share my experience to warn others. While the concept of immersing guests in the charm of traditional turf houses sounds appealing, the reality is anything but.|For about $400 per night, we expected at least a modicum of comfort and amenities, but what we encountered was simply unacceptable. The accommodation was exceedingly basic, devoid of any of the comforts one might expect. The atmosphere was dark and dreary, with minimal lighting and tiny windows that barely let in any natural light. It felt more like a shelter than a quaint retreat in the beautiful Icelandic countryside.|The sleeping arrangements were no better; the small single beds were cramped. The bathroom was very small as well. As for the kitchen, calling it "badly equipped" would be an understatement. It was rudimentary at best — a couple of pans, a minuscule fridge, and the glaring absence of basic kitchen appliances such as a toaster or a coffee machine… Cooking felt more like a chore in the dark than a convenience. I reported it to the staff at the reception who explained that it was on purpose to live like in the old days. However, they do charge today’s prices and accept gladly modern ways of payment.|Overall, my stay at the guesthouse was far from the cozy and nostalgic experience that was advertised. Instead, it felt like a scam. If you are looking for a genuine and comfortable Icelandic experience, I strongly advise you to look elsewhere. This guesthouse failed to deliver on its promise and left me feeling disappointed and dissatisfied. Save your money and seek out accommodations that offer true value...
Read moreWe stayed here as part of our Intrepid tour.||||The guest house is located in a very isolated area - but he views were spectacular to say the least - the views over the mountains in the changing light - just magnificent.||||As a tour group were allocated a 2 story chalet building - it had 5 rooms - one on the ground floor and 4 on the first floor. Our room was the front room with the balcony.||||However there was one huge problem with chalet building - NO keys, security, lockable doors - nothing - the front door could open by any one at any time and the individual rooms had no locks on the doors - any one could have entered and taken anything - our tour group was surprised at this - total lack of security! Some of our tour group were not happy with this arrangement.||||There was also a comping ground at the rear of the property.||||The building had 5 rooms - and there was only 1 toilet and one shower on the ground floor for 10 people - which made it a bit of an issue for showers/toileting||||The ground floor had a fully functional kitchen if you wanted to self cater. There was also a large common room to sit and enjoy the views or watch TV - there was also a DVD player with selection of DVD's.||||We had the dinner at the guest house - a large and hearty meal ( I had the smoked lamb- YUM) and desert and drinks - all at a reasonable price considering the isolated location of the guest house||||Again we had dinner here - this was a continental style breakfast - but it had a large variety of foods for breakfast...
