I will start with the restaurant, as we were all but forced to eat here due to the weather and complete lack of shelter in the camping area.
The ambiance would be fine, but a ten year old took to practicing "Ode to Joy", and tempo variations there of for 10 minutes. That was fine because at least they left the radio on, so the caucauphony was blended.
I ordered the bacon burger, and my partner had the cheese burger. They were fine. Nothing special, and not really worth the wait, but acceptable. I will note that if you don't like thousand island dressing trying to be big Mac sauce, then don't order the burger here because they were swimming in it.
Now, the campground... How this place merited one 5 star review, let alone the multiple that it has is beyond me.
The site itself is dull, situated behind the restaurant, with a large, unexciting hill in the background. The ground does have trees to provide a windbreak, but they really did nothing at this time of year.
The bathrooms were not disgusting, but they were not in good repair, with dripping taps, very stained sinks, toilet seats stuck to toilets with dried urine, and cheap fixtures. In an odd decision, the washer/drier is located in the woman's bathroom, so heaven forbid you be a man travelling alone.
The showers were bare bones. Two heads over a concrete floor with no real partition. I'm fine with that, having gone to many pools on our trip in Iceland, however there is only one set of showers for women and men, creating a very uncomfortable situation for those less liberal. The showers were not in good repair, with serious staining on the fixtures and floors.
I mentioned earlier that there was a lack of shelter for food prep in the camping area, which initially forced us inside to the restaurant. But in the morning when I went to make porridge I discovered the water was turned off to the dish washing sinks, and that one was completely broken with it's handle pulling off freely.
After all if this they have the audacity to charge 1500 ISK per person per night, the most of any site on our trip, despite being by far the worst. The disdain showed by the ownership towards campers is what really did them in. Had they attempted to provide the most minimal effort in any of the above criticism they would have scored slightly higher.
TL;DR. Food that is the very definition of mediocrity. A campsite that disrespects the camper and their wallet. A...
Read moreVery nice campsite with two options for camping: 1 outside like any normal campsite, the space is quite cosy and hidden, so sheltered too. Good for small campervans but also ok for tents. (Not sure about the price, we didn’t enquire) 2 inside the greenhouse, called the hobbit house. There are two heated greenhouses, presumably from hot water coming from the thermal spots around, where you can pitch your tent and be completely sheltered from the wind and rain. It felt good to have some warmth after so many days camping out in the cold! (2000 isk per person) The small downside is that the bathroom is a bit far from the greenhouses but it’s not really a problem as such. There are two buildings, one for the toilets and sinks and one for the shower. The toilets have a washing machine and a dryer at 500 isk for each one and a radiator and a washing rack if needed. The shower room has four showers all in one room so you can either go in on your own or share with partner/family. There is a lock on the door. I think it was quite a good concept as you have space but if it gets busy it may take a while to have a shower. In the morning we had breakfast in the main area, we had a set breakfast of soup (help yourself buffet of 3 different soups) and a platter of cheese, ham, jam, butter, cucumber, tomato and toast and a seeded bun. Delicious! (Coffee and tea self service refillable.) We paid 3,400 isk approx. The owner is very very...
Read moreIt's not the highest quality campsite but if you're backpacking/bikepacking it can really be a lifesaver. There are toilets and free hot showers, both pretty rustic but they work fine so I didn't mind. The best thing about the campsite is though, that you can pitch your tent in an empty greenhouse (heated) and are able to easily dry all your gear while staying the night in a warm, dry place protected from the wind. There is no kitchen but there is a table in the greenhouse so it feels like your own little cabin. Theres is a plug for electricity in the toilet room where you could charge you batteries. The check in is in the restaurant at the front and the owners are great people - if you are lucky you can get gas cans left by other campers for free.
At the restaurant you can buy fresh tomatos and carrots grown in the area. There is also a little store with fresh salad, herbs and strawberries probably less than 5 minutes by foot from the campsite.
Don't expect too much but it's a great place to escape the rain and wind for a night after a week...
