A great and unique food experience! Hats off to the chef and kitchen team! Food: - fusion food: a modern combination of sauces and vegetables with certain meats, such as horse, whale and lamb - a selection of fish dishes (with salmon and trout) as well as meat-based dishes (with beef, lamb or horse), such as burgers - a few vegan and vegetarian options like chickpea curry and patatas bravas - a selection with Irish, Icelandic and Danish beers as well as wines and cocktails Personal Highlights: - lamb sirloin - whale tataki - horse fillet - sweetened skyr with a peanut crumble and berry-based sauce Service: - friendly - quick - easy to approach - attentive Location: - enough space to sit comfortably at tables indoors and outdoors on a terrace - enough parking spots right in front of the restaurant - relaxing atmosphere, similar to a bar or pub, but with way more space We’re travelling through Iceland and had dinner at this restaurant a few days ago. We both enjoyed the delicious dishes and had a lovely time! It seemed to us that the chef(s) and kitchen staff knew exactly what they were doing! The food here tasted so much better than food that we‘ve had at other “fancy-shmancy“ restaurants. So: Hats off to the chef! Thank you to the team of the Hygge Restaurant & Bar for the delicious food. —> state of the review: May 2025

Truly delicious food and in a nice, quite, classy atmosphere. It is crazy how too quality the food is for these prices, but is was a very welcomed and needed pleasant surprise for us. The staff was friendly and wonderfully attentive too. Very much worth driving the 5 minutes out onto ‘nowhere’. Plus, it was nice to be out there. ;-) We had the Appetizer: baked brie (my fav); Dinner: fish and chips (one solid, huge piece of top quality cod), the lamb chops that melted in our mouths, and the fresh caught trout; Dessert: Chocolate cake (recommended) and the cheesecake made in house. The portions were robust and everything was delicious! PLUS the ‘house wine’ available by the glass was a very decent Tempranillo from Spain (one of my favorite wines). A comparable meal elsewhere in Iceland, or in California, would have easily been much more.

(With menu and video) this restaurant was recommended by river hotel. If you are a guest of river hotel you can get 10%off. The atmosphere is great and suitable for couples. But it has quit big area, it’s also good for reunion or party. It’s quiet and clean. All meals are well served with perfect decoration and incredibly tasty. Salmon is really recommended. The source is special and amazing. It will amaze you for sure. Staff and chef pay a lot attention on guests advice. I really have to say your meal is really delicious and you deserve high score. I love the cheese cake. We can see chef’s careful on every meal. If anyone pass by, you won’t want to miss it.

A Tranquil Culinary Oasis - Hygge at Hellishólar, Iceland

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

I recently had the pleasure of dining at the charming Hygge restaurant located in the picturesque Hellishólar region of Iceland, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience that left me with a warm and contented heart.

The first thing that struck me was the breathtaking surroundings. The restaurant is nestled amidst the stunning natural beauty of Hellishólar, offering breathtaking views of Iceland's picturesque landscape. The serene atmosphere alone was enough to set the stage for a memorable dining journey.

From the moment I stepped foot into the restaurant, I was enveloped by a sense of coziness and tranquility that perfectly embodies the essence of "hygge." The attentive and friendly staff warmly greeted me, making me feel like an honored guest.

The menu at Hygge is a delightful fusion of Icelandic and international cuisine, showcasing the freshest local ingredients. Every dish was a masterpiece of flavors and creativity, leaving me in awe of the culinary expertise of the chefs.

The culinary adventure began with a diverse and enticing menu. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and presented with artistic flair. The locally sourced ingredients were a testament to the chef's commitment to delivering authentic Icelandic flavors with a contemporary twist.

The starters were a perfect blend of freshness and creativity. As a seafood enthusiast, I opted for the pan-seared Arctic char for my main course, and it was a true revelation. The fish was cooked to perfection, tender and flaky, complemented by a delectable sauce that accentuated the natural flavors. The accompanying seasonal vegetables were a delightful surprise, and the portion size was just right.

The dining experience was enhanced by the impeccable service provided by the staff at Hygge. They were attentive, friendly, and well-informed, ensuring that every need was met with a smile. They also added a personal touch by sharing stories about the local ingredients and the inspiration behind some of the dishes, making the meal feel even more special.

To end the evening on a sweet note, I indulged in their signature dessert, the Skyr parfait drizzled with wild berry compote. It was a heavenly concoction that perfectly balanced sweetness with the tanginess of Skyr—a delightful way to conclude a remarkable dining experience.

If you find yourself in Iceland, make sure to visit Hygge at Hellishólar. It is a place where the beauty of nature meets culinary artistry, and where the feeling of hygge embraces you like a comforting embrace. Trust me, this dining gem is not to be missed, and it will leave you with cherished memories that will linger long after you leave its...

We looked for a good dining experience near Iceland's "golden circle" during our tour of the island, heading from north to south. We decided to take a small detour to try this restaurant, mostly based on it's generally positive reviews. That was certainly a good decision! The reviews were accurate, excellent food and good atmosphere. Surprising, in a restaurant well off the main road and with a camping site next door. One wouldn't expect great quality food, but here we are (I'm writing this while still in the restaurant, after two starters and the main course - about to order desert). Everything so far was excellent: mushroom soup - fantastic, carppacio - boring choice by us but they made it interesting and excellent with their additions - arctic char Thai style, and lamb made to perfection. All this with a nice bottle of Italian wine. Iceland is an expensive place, this restaurant is not cheap but not as crazy as many other places, and for the quality of the food certainly worth it. All in all,...
