My fiancé and I are driving the ring road and decided we were too tired to cook at a campsite, so we looked around town and randomly picked Sjavarborg based on their signpost — what a lucky find!!
The meal: We shared a starter of Buffalo cauliflower, which was good but very simple and nothing special. After reading the other reviews I deeply regret not getting the seafood soup 🙃. Then I had the lamb shanks which were served with sautéed peppers, onions, small potatoes, and a fantastic sauce (red wine or lamb gravy? Not sure) — Absolutely delicious and highlight of the meal. My fiancé is less adventurous and had a chicken wrap which she also loved. We finished by sharing the ice cream (two large scoops of chocolate and vanilla) with tiny caramel flakes, a dollop of whipped cream, and a decorative chocolate crisp flake (not sure what it’s called) on top. With two large beers our total came to about $100 USD, which is par for a nice sit down restaurant in Iceland in my anecdotal experience as a tourist these past two weeks.
The service: Our servers name was Merecia I believe, and she was fantastic!! She delivered prompt service, but more importantly was extremely kind and hospitable. She cracked a few jokes with us and took due care to make sure my allergy was noted to the chefs for all elements of the meal. She made a great meal truly exceptional— if you are the owner please make sure staff like her are recognized for going above and beyond!
The ambiance: Sjavarborg sits just along a fjord near the towns main harbor, and has beautiful waterfront views. When you walk in you immediately notice the spacious restaurant and views. It has a simple yet sleek interior, which is very much secondary to the great view. There is a small bar when you first walk in as well. As we ate our meal, our fantastic server noticed a whale spouting in the fjord which we (and several other patrons who rushed over to the window 😂) saw as well! It was difficult to tell what type of whale, but I would guess orca as we saw no tail indicative of a humpback diving as well as the fact that this is a seal town and orcas need dinner too!
Overall a great meal which was elevated by surprise whale watching and a great server—...
Read moreReally lovely little restaurant tucked away next to the ocean. We arrived at dinner time and found the restaurant very quiet, with perhaps two or three other groups in the large, airy dining space. In one corner, there was a sitting area with couches and luxurious long sheepskin, and board games on the coffee table, giving it a really homey feeling. Our server seemed to be the owner of the restaurant, and she was kind and helpful. One thing that I found slightly confusing for a moment was that, before she seated us, she showed us the board with the daily specials, which was on the wall next to the bar. Probably other people are quicker on the uptake, but it gave me the momentary impression that these few dishes were the menu, and I had a moment of feeling like I needed to quickly make a decision as to which of these items to get, and studying the words before we moved to our table a moment later. Of course, we were then handed two menus and my confusion was erased. Perhaps it would be more cohesive to show us to our table and then tell us about the specials. But this was a very minor thing, and probably just the product of a brain addled by too much driving that day, as we'd come directly from Myvatn. The food was excellent, and I had the fish of the day special, while my partner had a gorgeous seafood soup, which was also a special item that day. Both were so wonderfully presented and tasted so, so good. My fish was beautifully cooked, and surrounded by vegetables that were each little pearls of deliciousness. My partner's soup came with just the seafood base in the bottom of the bowl, and the rich broth was poured over the top by our server. It was a wonderful touch and these dishes from the sea were only enhanced by our view of the ocean lapping the shore right next to us. I certainly...
Read moreIt's been one and a half years now and neither can I forget about the delicious food we were served, nor the view and ambience and definitly not, ESPECIALLY not about this masterpiece of a lava-cake!
Update: a fellow redditor visited and told me the lava cake was taken off the menu. The restaurant still earns 5 points though.
There's just one restaurant I've visited so far that was able to serve a lava-cake this good, and from a financial viewpoint I'm happy that that place is located in Sassnitz, Rügen ( the spot's called "Wellenreiter" and I literally wrote the cross-reference-review 5 minutes ago) so I only have to travel 500 kilometers and do not have to fly to Iceland and travel to Hvammstangi only for the cake. But to be frank: I would. I don't know yet when we'll return to Iceland and if we'll be visiting this region again, but if we do: be assured we'll pay a visit and get dinner again!
11/10 would...
