Mising Pork Thali -Rs.480

Mising Kitchen, Hengrabari Road, Guwahati

Assamese -Mising

$$$$

12.01.25

My Google research till 1am in the morning took us to Mising Kitchen. Now usually we consider all food in Assam as Assamese but tend to forget that there are many communities & tribes in Assam itself. Mising being one of them.

So my "Porky Sunday" story continues. After @iceshira had completed his work we called up @amarnathhazarika to join us for lunch at @misingkitchen. He sounded upbeat & immediately said that it was a great place. I was also looking forward to meet @fruitcaqe again after Pune.

We all met up inside this restaurant located on the 1st floor bustling with customers & smiling workers smartly adorned in traditional Mising attire. We didn't however take into account that this was the Sunday before Magh Bihu & so the rush was double. We had to wait 30mins for a table. We ordered in advance & well without batting an eyelid, I went for the Mising Pork Thali.

The Thali had Rice, Yellow Dal, Mising Dal, Khar, Leafy veg fry, Aloo Pitika, Pumpkin fry, Kheer, Chutney, Pickle & the meats, 2 pcs each of Pork boiled with Outenga (Elephant Apple) & Rice Flour (Pitha Guri), Pork Curry cooked with Tomato, Pork Khorikaa (Barbeque Pork) & a bowl of finely diced Pork innards cooked with sesame & Banana stem (Kaldil). Apart from the pork they also gave Fish Pitika (mashed) & half of a fish fry (it may be called Patot Diya, correct me if I'm wrong).

I started eating & everything was top notch. The rice, dal, veggies, pork & fish, everything superb. The rice was of good quality. The dal simple but well seasoned. The mising dal was somewhat interesting. The khar stamped it's Assamese origins. The pumpkin, leafy veg, aloo pitika added variety to the thali. Having said that the rice & the veg items were definitely the regular Assamese spread. It was the meats that had the Mising touch. The Pork Curry was the least interesting even though it was tasty. The pork innards cooked with sesame & Banana stem was pretty interesting & upped the game. The pork barbeque brought in that burnt & smokey skill & variety from the normal gravy dishes. But the one dish that stood out was the pork with Outenga & rice flour. It was the best. It was light & tangy & brought a breath of freshness to the otherwise heavy meal.

With so much pork, the fish helped break the monotony. The fish fry was like any fried fish but the meat was fresh. Something difficult to find in Shillong. The fish patika again added flavor & freshness.

Everything was better than I expected. But if I could find one thing to pick on then it would be the tenderness of the meat. It was definitely tender but personally I prefer the meat to be a little bit more tender.

Seeing the popularity & the rush, I guess it's time for these guys to expand their business.

Overall this was such a wonderful find.

Before I start reviewing, I would like to state that don't ever believe those 1 star reviews mentioned of this beautiful gem of restaurant. Neither is it over-priced nor is the food items all look and taste same. Just envious negative reviewers spreading false hate.

Food - 5/5. We ordered Mising Pork Thali which is 470 per thali. It is true the price have increased since 2017, which is last time I visited. But let me clarify in the thali you are offered 3 variants of Pork (Curry based, One Pumpkin-Curry based and one variant being Smoked Pork - all variants had 2 giant portion of meat); they also offered one Chicken item cooked in Pig's blood (Aran) and 2 fish variants (one fried and one being mashed). They also provided 2 variants of dal (yellow and urad), one veg sabji (I think it was potato pumpkin based), one khaar item, mashed potato and spinach-potato fry sabji. For all these items and the quantity, 470 in year 2023 seems justified. Quality of the cooked food is still the best and authentic as per Missing tribe way of preparation.

Service - 5/5. We were lucky to enter restaurant just 20 mins before busy hour. So, the beautiful service lady took our order and also ensured that whatever table she is attending too she meticulously looks to customer needs. She used to check up on us every 10 mins if we have any concern or need of refill of rice or sort.

Atmosphere - 4.5/5. The table was polished but I only deducted 0.5 because the walls of the restaurant is in dire nend of a re-paint as it looks a bit old and weary. The cleaning staff should also ensure entrance is cleaned of dust in the entry staircase. Rest the wash basin and other areas seemed pretty clean.

Final verdict: Please visit the restaurant to try authentic Mising tribe food. Probably the best in Guwahati hands down. Try out the food first before blindly believing and spreading hate towards it. Also, the restaurant gets busy during weekends esp Sunday during lunch hour so pick your time properly if you are an impatient person who...

In my opinion it is one of the best eateries in Guwahati serving authentic ethnic Assamese cuisines. One definitely comes out satisfied after having tasted the fabulous dishes Mising Kitchen offers. Located at Hengrabari, just about a kilometer from the famous Ganeshguri Chariali area of Guwahati, it isn't at all difficult to find this restaurant. If you're lucky enough you'll get a table here otherwise it's usually a wait in here. But the courteous staff of Mising Kitchen makes sure you don't have to wait for long. When I visited Mising Kitchen for the first time I among the lucky few who didn't have to wait for a table to get ready. Apart from the usual Assamese cuisines, Mising Kitchen offers some special variety of Mising dishes too. Everything they offer are so delicious and adequate in quantity that they make pretty much sure that the customer returns to visit them once more. As per the quantity of food they serve, I must say that it is more than adequate. For example, a half plate of grilled chicken is sufficient enough for two to consume. As regards the space, I would say they have much more to improve on that front. Considering the large number of customers that flock to this place, I think it would have been better had the place been a little bigger so that no one has to wait. One more thing I noticed in there is that the washroom was not that clean. I must commend the restaurant staff for their extremely professional behavior and conduct. They are extremely friendly and caring to the needs of the customer. Overall, I must say Mising Kitchen is fabulous and a must visit...
