Ranch Restaurant at Big Banyan Vineyard – A Memorable Day That Ended on a Sour Note

We recently visited the Big Banyan Vineyard on May 28, and while our initial experience with the vineyard tour and lunch at the Ranch Restaurant was pleasant and enjoyable, what followed left us deeply disappointed and disturbed.

After completing our lunch, we were walking back to our car parked in the Ranch Restaurant parking area around 4 PM. My five-year-old daughter noticed a large lemon-like fruit lying on the ground near one of the trees. As expected from a child her age, she was insistent and curious about it. In a moment of innocence, I picked up the fruit for her. No sooner had I done that than a security guard approached us aggressively, shouting in the local language.

Caught completely off guard by his hostility, both my brother and I immediately apologized and tried to explain that it was an innocent mistake. Despite our polite and immediate apology, the guard continued yelling at us for several minutes, his tone loud, hostile, and deeply disrespectful — especially considering we were with three young children (two aged 5 and one 12-year-old).

Hoping to resolve the matter calmly, I approached the security in-charge to bring this issue to his attention. To our utter shock, he too behaved unprofessionally and began using foul and offensive language, dismissing our concerns entirely. There was no effort to listen, understand, or even de-escalate the situation. His behavior was not only unacceptable for a guest-facing role but also intimidating, especially in front of our children.

Still seeking a proper resolution, we drove to the main Big Banyan Vineyard area and requested to file a formal complaint. However, the security personnel there refused to record our complaint, stating casually that since it was past 5 PM, there was no one available to take it. We requested to speak to our vineyard tour guide, Anvesh, but we were not allowed to contact him, despite our insistence.

This entire incident — the aggression from the security guard, the indifference and misconduct from his supervisor, and the lack of any meaningful grievance redressal — was not just unpleasant but completely unacceptable for an establishment that presents itself as a hospitality destination. What began as a memorable outing turned into a distressing and frustrating experience for our family.

We visited as two brothers with three children, hoping to have a fun and relaxing time. Instead, we were met with intimidation, disrespect, and apathy — all over a simple, unintentional act for which we immediately apologized.

We urge the Big Banyan and Ranch Restaurant management to look into this incident seriously. Guests — especially those with children — should never be subjected to such treatment. Security personnel are meant to protect and support the visitor experience, not intimidate and harass.

Unfortunately, this has ruined our impression of the Ranch Restaurant and Big Banyan Vineyard. We will not be returning and will share this experience with our extended network to caution others. We sincerely hope that corrective steps are taken so no other family has to go through what we did.

They are knowledgeable about the menu and offer excellent recommendations based on your preferences. The service is prompt, yet you never feel rushed — it’s the perfect balance that adds to the charm of this place.

All at its best

Stone throw away from Bangalore city is this wonderful place for best suited for a couple of days of family outing to unwind and enjoy the lush green surroundings. We found everything at it's best and will be happy to recommend this place.

Service : Top notch, Hari the GM and his wonderful team will pamper you while there. Service levels are comparable to the best in the industry, and we could feel that is part of the culture of every single staff at the property.

Food : Again 5 stars without doubt. Kiran the restaurant in-charge with Vipin and his team with the awesome chef Navamani offers you the tastiest in all cuisines. We were there on a weekday and had ala-carte , go with the recommendations from Hari and Vipin and you won't be disappointed. We tried Kerala delicacies of fish and beef and found it excellent. There is a good collection of hard liquor, wine, beer etc. Breakfast is served only to guests staying in the property and is part of the package, instead of offering a standard buffet, it is crafted based on your preferences.

Cottage : Very tastefully done Kerala style twin cottage, ideal for 2 families going together. Large bedrooms and open toilet (that may take a while to get used to this concept, you may get an unexpected visitor in a prying lizard, but you will soon start enjoying that) are excellent, but for us the best part was relaxing in the open Kerala style verandah running around the cottages. Lawn in front of the cottage is good to relax with the bed coffee , kids will love this place for sure. There is only 1 cottage with 2 beds available now, there are more getting added soon. For now, you have the luxury of having the whole place to yourself except the restaurant area during lunch and dinner.

Farm: There is big organic farm around which suited well for our morning walks. There are farm animals and birds in the surrounding. I heard they source vegetables for their kitchen from the farm.

I cannot comment on the wine tour since we parked that for the next visit.
