We were on our way to Hubli/Dharwad in the morning when we came across the culinary heaven called “Shanbhag Hotel”. It is relatively a quiet place on NH63 and you may end up not noticing it. We came across Shanbhag Hotel when we were on our way to Belgaum after leaving from Gokarna early morning. We reached Yellapur at around 8 and thought to have a breakfast.
Ambiance: It was peak breakfast time and the restaurant was buzzing with customers. The place is moderately clean and the interior is pretty much like any other restaurant in that league. A bit of sunlight from the windows was hardly helping but a fully functioning artificial lightening inside Shanbhag was good enough.
Food: At such places, the only crack hoteliers can have is providing good quality food and that’s where Shanbhag hits the nail. We ordered puri-sabzi, banana buns-korma to begin with. Banana buns are a Manglorian specialty and were recommended to us specifically by our home stay owner in Gokarna. As both the dishes arrived at our table, the smoking hot puris and banana buns set our bellies ringing. The customary coconut chutney in both the plates were seemingly unnecessary but a good back up. However, that was not required since the korma and sabzi went well with the banana buns and puri. We finished both in no time. Idli-sambhar followed this and again, it was made to perfection. The idli melted in the mouth right as we kept it. Sambhar was delicious. Overall, the food was great.
Service: Service was good enough. Even though the restaurant was nearly full, the food arrived in about right time.
Would recommend Shanbhag Hotel to anyone who is travelling on NH63...
Read moreFound the place satisfactory considering the remote location on an Express Highway of Karnataka State. Have halted here for a quick cuppa Coffee/Tea break while driving to and fro to Mangalore city and Mumbai quite occasionally. Many people frequent the hotel as it good by middle class standards. There is a shop at the side selling some good and cheap local stuff too like chips, farsans, local packed delicacies, perfumes, etc for car/bus travellers too. I had mendu wada sambar/cutney which was tasty and fulling. The quantity and quality of stuff was above the normal hotels as compared to city like Mumbai. Timing am not very sure but I remember morning 7 to evening 11, I suppose because of ladies staff also employed here in the kitchen who prepare the food and delicious sweets. The price too is reasonable. Nothing much tweeking of the wallet required. The ambience is satisfactory. No problem for a visit with family and friends is my recommendation for...
Read moreThe rating is for the owner.. I paid him cash n he was busy chatting with some acquaintances.. Since it was just 10rs I needed to collect I didn't bother to ask him.. When I came back from the washroom.. He called me out n asked for money.. I politely told him that he owes me money n I have already given.. He insisted I was wrong all the way.. Only when I insisted on checking CCTV footage again did he realize his mistake.. But had no remorse nor guilt on his face..he Quietly gave my 10 rs back.. Well the restaurant is good on taste though.. But the damage is already done.. I visit everytime I pass this place.. That is like once a quarter.. N I always look down...
