A Culinary Gem by the Backwaters: Kayaloram Restaurant, Panayilkadavu
Kayaloram Restaurant in Panayilkadavu offers an exceptional dining experience that beautifully blends Kerala’s traditional flavors with the tranquil beauty of the backwaters. Recommended by my friend, Navas, a retired Sub-Inspector who owns a boat nearby, this establishment truly lives up to its reputation.
Nestled along the serene backwaters of Panayilkadavu in Vakkom, Kayaloram Restaurant offers an unparalleled dining experience that beautifully encapsulates the essence of Kerala’s rich culinary heritage. During our recent family lunch, we were captivated by the restaurant’s harmonious blend of delectable cuisine, tranquil ambiance, and authentic local flavors.
Ambiance and Location
Perched on the shores of the Akathumuri Lake, the restaurant provides diners with breathtaking views of the tranquil waters. The gentle ripples of the lake, complemented by the soft rustling of palm leaves, create a soothing backdrop that enhances the overall dining experience. The open-air seating allows guests to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty while savoring their meals.
Culinary Delights
Kayaloram is renowned for its commitment to traditional Kerala cuisine, emphasizing the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Their meal was a testament to this dedication: • Karimeen (Pearl Spot) Fry: Expertly marinated and fried to perfection, the fish boasted a crispy exterior while retaining its succulent interior. • Konchu (Prawns) Fry and Theeyal: The prawns were notably fresh, with the fry offering a delightful crunch and the theeyal presenting a rich, tangy gravy infused with roasted coconut and spices. • Kappa (Tapioca): Cooked to the ideal consistency, the kappa paired wonderfully with the spicy fish curry, embodying a classic Kerala combination. • Chempally (Red Snapper) Fry: This dish stood out with its flavorful seasoning and impeccable frying technique, highlighting the freshness of the catch.
The generous use of natural spices elevated each dish, allowing the authentic flavors to shine through without overpowering the palate.
Service and Hospitality
The staff at Kayaloram exuded warmth and attentiveness, ensuring that our dining experience was both comfortable and memorable. Their knowledge of the menu and willingness to offer recommendations showcased their dedication to customer satisfaction.

The picturesque setting further enhances the dining experience, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and travelers seeking an immersive culinary journey.

Situated on the banks of lake it gives you a good view. The standard meals here cost 150 which would include a fresh water fish fry and prawns theeyal along with tapioca. The rest of the items would be the kichadi, avial and pickle along with pappadam, parippu and sambar along with karingali water. You can get extra fish like karimeen as well.Ambience and cleanliness is fine. Don't expect a temperature check and others related to covid. There are 6 tables altogether with 4 chairs each. It's a better idea to call and book your lunch in advance. Staff is very helpful. The road towards the restaurant is a bit narrow. But there is parking space for around 15 cars. The boating is to a nearby island which is having a temple(ponnum thuruthu). 500 per trip to and fro is the charges. Don't expect any life jacket. We saw some other people also providing boating services near the bridge. They also have an open waiting space outside where we saw a couple cutting cake to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Nearest ATM is at the Anchuthengu junction. Anchuthengu fort is 7...

Highlight: they got a small boat ride in which they will take us to small island nearby . A 150 years old temple is there in the island nd the ambience is very dark due to the densely grown big trees and bushes which is a must see experience. Boating charges rs 600 for 30 minutes for a group and it is worth to see
Cons: The dining area and table should be having little more furnished and cozy..service also to be improved...you don't get other recreational facilities to have fun apart from the 12 seater...
