I recently had the pleasure of dining at the New Periyar Restaurant in Varappuza, Ernakulam, and I must say it was a delightful experience. This restaurant is a hidden gem nestled on the banks of the picturesque Periyar River, just before the Varappuzha bridge. The setting, with Chinese fishing nets in the backdrop, is simply stunning and adds to the overall charm of the place.
The seating arrangements at Periyar Restaurant are reminiscent of a traditional village eatery, which creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Moreover, the ample parking space is a relief, especially when traveling by car.
Now, let's talk about the food. We opted for the lunch meal, which included red rice accompanied by a delicious spread of side dishes. The beetroot thoran, chammanthi, avial, pappadam, and pickle perfectly complemented the meal. The gravay fish curry, sambar, and buttermilk were all noteworthy and contributed to a satisfying dining experience.
What makes this restaurant truly special is its reputation for fish dishes. The unique concept of bringing a variety of curries and fried fishes to your table is fantastic. The small portions allow you to sample a wide range of flavors, and I must say it's an awesome idea.
During our visit, we indulged in a seafood extravaganza, selecting dishes such as Clam Meat Fry, Koonthal Roast (squid), Crab Roast, Manthal Fry, Chemmen Roast (prawns), Karimeen Pollichathu, Podimeen Fry, and even a Beef Roast. With the exception of the Beef Roast, which was just okay, all the dishes were incredibly tasty. The Crab Roast and Koonthal Roast, in particular, were exceptional, and we couldn't resist ordering another round.
To top it all off, the bill for this sumptuous feast for four came to a reasonable Rs 1290, making it great value for the quality and quantity of food we enjoyed.
While we didn't explore all the offerings on the menu, I can wholeheartedly recommend New Periyar Restaurant for its delectable fish dishes and the unique dining experience it offers. Whether you're a seafood lover or simply looking for a memorable meal in a scenic location, this place won't disappoint.

Read moreIts an okay restaurant that is getting a lot of attention it doesnt deserve. Its located along the riverside. You dont have outdoor seating. Parking space is adequate. Main dishes are seafood and lunch. Facilities and seating are that of any usual kerala restaurant. Nothing fancy about this place or the taste and quality of the food they serve.
Taste is average. The fish fries i got were cold and not freshly made. The lunch was a cold one altogether even though i was there around 2:00 pm. Curries accompanying the lunch also are only of average taste. We tried around five different dishes and the lunch, nothing that much impressive or tasty, atleast for the money they charge. The food is not bad but not good enough either, just a bland unemotional experience. If you are having kerala dishes for the first time, may be you will like this place and food. Whatever you get here is available in any other kerala restaurant, if not better. Nothing exclusive or unique about this place. Just a usual lunch place like the other hundreds of lunch houses in kochi. The service is also average. The ambience and hygeine factor also when compared to other similiar establishments in and around kochi did not impress me. (I dont know if the day i visited was a bad day when all their dishes and all of their facilities and everything around suddenly became substandard. If its so then its just me having these problems)
But one thing I can say for sure. There are many better options for having seafood around kochi for the same price if not cheaper. Nothing unique or exclusive here. Most of the dishes are just affordable, but some items are too overpriced.
Its an okayish, normal, nothing out of the ordinary, kerala restaurant that serves okay food. Not a place you should travel to exclusively for having kerala food. Its definitely not a food destination for me. And if you are planning to get an authentic kerala food experience in kochi there are many better...
Read morePERIYAR RESTAURANT , Varapuzha I have crossed Varapuzha bridge at least a zillion times before. But today something new happened, when hunger made its call and my eyes struck on the hoarding "നാടൻ ഉണ്". I was impressed in the first place to see the well made drive passage to the restaurant by riverside. Was not certain to get down there, but the flooded 4 wheeler parking area reassured my decision. I picked the riverside aisle seat on a table for two(image 3). I must admit the riverfront annd the cheenavala was very impressive, totally ethnic feel to it. Without waiting for ordering on of those "chechi's" brought a plate filled of specials (image 4) . It was mouthwatering and too confusing to choose from the lot. Finally ended up choosing 4 special items for 2 persons. Chose kakka erachi , thiloppi fry , duck roast & kozhuva peera. Lunch plate arrived immediately and chose the fish gravy over sambhar. Waah !! I swear .that was an amazing choice ,the intense essence of വാളം പുലി dripping on each drop ..uff !! Duck roast was another hit of the day ! If at all I had to be a little stringent with critics , I would mention the choice of rice. On any given afternoon I would prefer to have a കുത്തരി ചോറ് but they had this off-white plumpy beads. Finally when it came to the billing part , some magic happened here by rounding off the entire list to 420 Rs. Amazing price menu, totally economic , and totally worth a drive all the way from cochin for this. In total I would rate this a wonderful Fish-curry Extravaganza on the "naadan"cusine league. They are open from 12.30 - 4pm . They also have breakfast , which I will rate and...
