One of the must visit toddy shops in Kuttanad, and yes it is also family friendly. You can reach the place by your own vehicle or use public transport like KSRTC or even a boat. Just call the hotel number, and they will happily pick you up from the nearest ferry point.
The moment you step in, there is a beautiful surprise waiting, a wide stretch of green paddy fields right behind the shop. The tables are set near this view, so you can enjoy your food while taking in the scenery. On the other side, there is a huge lake right in front. It is honestly one of the most scenic and peaceful spots around. The cool breeze, calm surroundings, and natural vibe make afternoon or evening the best time to visit.
For families, they have two dedicated houseboats tied to land where you can sit and eat in private comfort. It is a really nice touch.
Food wise, they offer almost every kind of lake and seafood you can imagine. Fish and crab are the stars here. My favorite was the Karimeen Pollichath, super tasty. Only complaint is that some dishes could use better quantity for the price.
They also serve three types of toddy, Mulam Kallu with chopped chilies in bamboo, Munthiri Kallu with dried grapes, and Ilamkallu which is plain fresh toddy. All three were fresh, good quality, and worth trying.
The main highlights here are the natural beauty, peaceful ambiance, and great taste. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but honestly, it feels worth it once you soak in the whole experience. The place is actually an island surrounded by lake, which adds to the charm. The owner is friendly and welcoming too.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Rajapuram Kayaal Shap, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience. This hidden gem is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a unique and authentic culinary adventure.
From the moment I stepped in, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The rustic decor and traditional architecture transported me to a bygone era, and I felt like I was in for a treat.
The service was top-notch, with friendly and attentive staff who ensured that our needs were met throughout the meal. But what truly stole the show was the food - oh, the glorious food!
I tried their signature dishes, including the Kayaal Shap Special, and I was blown away by the flavors and textures. Each dish was expertly prepared and presented, and the quality of the ingredients was evident in every bite.
The Kayaal Shap Special was a masterclass in balance and harmony, with a perfect blend of spices, herbs, and other ingredients. The flavors danced on my palate, leaving me wanting more.
But what truly impressed me was the variety of dishes on offer. From traditional favorites to innovative creations, there's something for everyone at Rajapuram Kayaal Shap.

Read moreGreat location, really pleasant and clean rooms, but the thing that makes this such a good place to stay are the staff. All of the people are incredibly helpful and generous with their time and advice. We travelled with two six year olds and lots of luggage and despite the stairs up to the elevator this was one of the nicest places we stayed in the four weeks we were in Thodupuzha. The staff here was so friendly and helpful. The breakfast was yummy and free. My only complaint is that I had a private bathroom down the hall from my room but it ended up being fine. I would stay here again! It's in a perfect location. Less than a 5 minute talk from the main sights but off the crowded thoroughfares. Service is friendly and accommodating. When I arrived they recommended some places to eat which turned out to be great. Simple room but well-equipped and in good condition. Good breakfast spread. This was our second visit to the Hotel Alessandra. We like this hotel because of its location and price. Hotel rates in this area our easily $50.00 more per night. Our room was large and had a nice bathroom. The staff were friendly; as we remembered from our last visit. The breakfast was complete, although the breakfast area is a little tight to maneuver around the buffet. The one aspect of this hotel that could be of issue to a guest is the stairs to reach the elevator - about two floors. This could be an issue if you have a lot of luggage, or of an advanced age like me. Otherwise, highly recomend.....
