Ramassery Idly is a fluffy and soft idly which is flat that was surprising. And had a curiosity to tast it for last two years. so i visited Saraswathi tea shop situated in a neighborhood village of Palakkad town. The Ramassery idli is known for its incredibly soft and fluffy texture and great taste. It is said that the unique recipe of the idli was brought to the small hamlet of Ramassery in Palakkad by a family which migrated from Kanjeepuram in Tamil Nadu, in search of jobs.

This acclaimed idli is a bit flatter in shape than the regular idlis available elsewhere.

The history of Ramassery Idli tells how a small village in Palakkad attracted widespread attention with its inimitable taste. The hot idlis can be eaten with delicious chutney powder mixed with oil, chilli chutney or coconut chutney.

no matter how many years passed, the captivating taste and popularity of Ramassery idli never changes. Ramassery village, the birth place of this idli, is situated only 2 km away from Elappully on Palakkad-Pollachi road.

Those who belong to Mudaliar community migrated from Tamil Nadu started making idlis first. They used to make idlis for people who work in paddy fields. Later, a portion of house was transformed into a small shop for selling idlis.

History: Mudaliar people belong to Palladam near Tiruppur. It was Mambully Mudaliar who first started a shop. Later, Chithira Mudaliar and Lokanathan Mudaliar also ran the shop. After the demise of Lokanathan Mudaliar, his wife Bhagyalakshmi Amma took charge of the shop.

She managed to take care of her family and marry off her five daughters with the income earned through the sale of idlis. Also the shop was facelifted in the meantime and it was named as...

75 kms for a breakfast? Crazy or what? But then this is no ordinary breakfast. It is the Ramassery Idly.

This is not our typical Idli. It is spread like a Dosa and steamed like an idli. The small village of Ramassery is located 4 kms off Palakkad-Pollachi Rd. We arrived there by 9 am. There are 2 hotels where u can get this idli but many households here sell idlis to restaurants and homes. We went to the old and famous Saraswathy Vilasam. The place was not crowded. It is just a normal kerala style tea shop. No big amenities. The moment we sat they placed the plate with the Idlis and started pouring chutney, chammanthi podi , ulli chammanthi and stew. The idli was not served hot and hence not as soft as we wanted it. The chammanthi podi is spicy and hence we loved. We were very hungry and started eating and in midst of the hoggging came the star of the day Uzhunnu Vada. So fresh and crisp . Probably one of the best we've have tasted.

If you fancy a special breakfast then do go to Ramassery and enjoy the hospitality of the innocent village folks. They are very good at service. They took us in and showed the kitchen and was more than happy to explain details about it.

Please visit it and try it out. Support them and pls respect them. Dont go expecting fine dining expert. Both our stomach and heart was full after the breakfast.

First of all... If ur from South India and have Idli occassionally at home, then u won't find anything new here. I recently visited this place, on a Sunday morning... Had heard about this place several times and after seeing the reviews, I had to visit it. I don't know the historical importance of it, or the invisible ambiance, but from what I saw, it's an old glorified shack, opp. a Temple. Kudos to the pseudo food vloggers for your work, I hope u get all the likes and shares u need... Personally, it's just idli-vada, coconut chutney, chutney powder & sambar...with tea or coffee served with a delay as compared to other normal shops. Having the chutney bowl in ur table is a miracle since it can vanish in seconds, Due to the rush and less staff or infra to handle this, it's survival of the fittest... Coming to the idli... It's basically normal idli in the shape of a dosa or THICK dosa u can call it... I couldn't find it worth the hype. If ur going to have Idli for the first time, then I would suggest you have this experience. No offence...
