Biryani has eternally been a crowd puller. And for my colleagues and I, it has been that choice that unites us all as far as our food preferences go.
We recently organised a lunch party at work, where Biryani, per usual, was unanimously chosen for the meal, and Behrouz Biryani’s Colaba branch was where we placed our order.
We placed orders by the kilo, as there were a substantial number of people forming a part of the gathering. The vegetarians had Falafels for starters, Paneer Subz Biryani for mains with mint raita, and Gulab Jamun and Gulkand Mousse for dessert.
Of the above, I would recommend everything other than the Gulab Jamun.
The FALAFELS were like small nuggets which made it easy for us to simply pop them in and savour the bite sized pieces. They weren’t extremely dry and the texture was just the right balance of grainy and smooth. Loved them.
The BIRYANI was beautifully aromatic with the flavour of spices nicely incorporated within. The chunks of paneer were soft, well marinated, and oozing with flavour. The subzi part of the Biryani was slightly spicier, but that went well with the mildness of the rice. What I love about Behrouz’s biryani is the long grained Basmati rice that they use which is truly reflective of the emphasis they place on the quality of ingredients. The spices, Paneer, subzi, and rice cooked together on “dum” made for a beautiful preparation of biryani. Also, the RAITA was the right consistency (not very runny, not too thick) and provided from respite from the heat of the spices.
The star of the show for me was the GULKAND MOUSSE which had a base of Gulkand topped with rose flavoured mousse, and a dollop of whipped cream on top, and was served in a shot glass like container. The quantity is just enough for dessert and doesn’t leave you overwhelmed with sugary sweetness.
The GULAB JAMUNS weren’t as spongy, porous, and light as I would have liked them to be, which is probably why they didn’t impress me much.
As far as the packaging goes, we didn’t notice any kind of spillage or leakage, and the food was quite warm when it arrived. The dishes were neatly marked as veg and non veg using green and red tapes respectively, which ensured that no mix up happened between the two. Spoons were provided alongside as well. However, when ordering biryani by the kilo, please ensure that you have enough plates at hand as Behrouz doesn’t provide the same.
The delivery was delayed by 15 mins but we were intimated regarding the same via text message. So no complaints regarding that either. However, it would be advisable to have some buffer time if you’re placing huge orders, just to avoid any undue delays.
As far as price is concerned, the per person cost comes to about INR 400 roughly, which is fairly decent for an event where mid range budget is involved.
Overall my colleagues and I were supremely satisfied with the meal and the delivery. What I would recommend are a few more starter options on the menu for vegetarians, but as far as taste and quality are concerned, Behrouz left no stone unturned to make it a lovely experience for all of us. Lastly, I’d ask Behrouz to keep up the great work and continue serving their version of delicious,...
Read moreI had been told that the Mutton biryani was very good. Hence I ordered Mutton biryani and chicken biryani. The latter was nice. However the Mutton biryani was the pits. I called their Customer Care. First I spoke to Chetan Gore whose replies were from a written script including telling me that they are not allowed to give their surnames as per company policy!! He refused to connect me to his Manager, grudgingly gave me the number and promised the Manager will call me back in 5 minutes. When I persisted, the number he gave was an incorrect number!!!!Waited for about 45 minutes but no call back and hence called Customer Care again. This time spoke to Abhishek Kamble who was better but replies were again from the script. He promised the Manager will call within 10 minutes and said will arrange a replacement Mutton biryani. Fortunately I did get a call within the stipulated time but the person wanting to speak was the order taker. When I pushed, Pramod who is the Store manager spoke to me. I gave him my feedback saying the chicken biryani was good but the Mutton in the biryani was undercooked. I suggested him to come home and see the Mutton quality himself. He promised he will be there in 30 minutes but was there in 20 minutes. Superb! He came with a colleague as Pramod does not eat Mutton. His colleague tasted the mutton and said it's undercooked. Before that the replacement biryani had come so I requested the delivery boy (Shaukat) to check the mutton quality from the original delivery. He also said it's undercooked. Pramod offered me a refund for both the biryanis which I refused. I also told them to take the replacement back. Just to check , I opened the replacement mutton biryani and the Mutton there was also undercooked!!!! I told them to check it and they agreed. Sent replacement biryani back with them. Got number of Mr Navin Singh, Area Manager so WhatsApped him at 11:45 pm or so. I got a revert back asking if he can call me. I told him to do so. I gave him a brief of the saga. He gave me a lot of sales talk including mentioning that my DP to him was like that of his, at first, father and then of God!! I just asked him one question - does your Chef NOT check the food before it goes out?? He said he will check and get back tomorrow. I got a WhatsApp message saying he will call but no call. Got a call the next day. Reason being they did not have electricity! Anyway he called the following day and went on with his sales talk. I asked him whether he had spoken to his Chef. He said he had and the Chef said that there was no problem with the Biryani!! Typical reply from a Chef who will never succeed in life. I just told Navin Singh that if this was my outlet, I would have sacked him there and then. I also told him that with this attitude I do not want to continue the conversation. He offered me a refund and a replacement biryani. I refused both and told him for me it's the end of the line as far as Behrouz/Fasoos is concerned. Behrouz is part of Fasoos or the other way around. So my suggestion is avoid this place. Waste of money. No clue of what is happening. No clue of Customer Care or Customer...
Read moreIn the era where restaurants compete over introducing newer cuisines with redefined recipes, i am thrilled to have come across a restaurant that serves ONLY Biryani's, that too steaming hot, Behrouz Biryani. The sole reason why i emphasized on the word AUTHENTIC is because, this place doesn't offer the so called mumbai style masaledar biryani, but surely they will make you feel delighted with their offerings.
Taste - I happen to order for a "Zaikedaar Paneer Biryani" and it completely justified the overloaded presence of soft and well marinated paneer cubes. This is served with a box full of biryani, raita which is a bit liquidy and tastes similar to masala butter milk, but goes really well with the biryani. Last but not the least you can expect a small piece of gulab jambun and the cherry on the cake is the mukhwas (mouth freshener) which comes in a small pack, that would give you a larger than life feeling of being treated like a Majesty. It is well blended with aromatic spices and enriched with a generous amount of roasted almonds and raisins that would make you feel like a king. The overall taste of the biryani is medium spicy, but that's what makes it really delicious. It has an array of numerous spices that you can taste in every bite & the best part is that, it is lighter on your stomach and doesn't make you feel bloated. At first i felt accomplishments such as Papad & Onion along with the main dish were missing, but after trying a roasted papad with it, i realised that what comes in the pack, is very thoughtfully designed to compliment eachother & any additions would only tarnish the blend of this heavenly meal. One thing that should be worked upon is, adding a bit more of masala to the biryani base, so that it doesn't taste a little dry.
Delivery time - As per zomato the delivery time shows as 60 minutes. Ireceived it in less than 30 minutes & that too perfectly hot, so kudos to the delivery guys on doing such a fantastic job.
Packing - This has been one of the finest packings, which i have ever seen coming from an only delivery outlet. The packaging was done to perfection and the spoon that came along with it was really sturdy, unlike the routine plastic ones. The spoon point might sound silly, but it bears a lot of importance as most of the people struggle to eat with those non reliable spoons.
Pricing - While the cost of 299rs (270+taxes) for a portion of biryani might not sound too competitive, but in my opinion it is worth till the last grain of rice. The quantity is sufficient enough to suffice 2 people (average eaters), so taking that into mind the price gets a big thumbs up.
Recommendation : Zaikedaar Paneer Biryani.
