Today me & @gav_through_the_lens are off looking for Living Root Bridges south of Sohra. Gavin had some work in the morning, so we left Shillong at 1:30pm. We reached Sohrarim at about 2:30pm & were hungry. So we stopped by at Cloud Country for lunch. The place has ample parking & the exterior looks jaw droppingly good. It looked like the biggest Hut I have ever seen in my life, next to the Ing Saad. We entered & the place is divided into 2 different dining areas. The one outfront is a large Hall & perhaps can be used for parties & such. However, the plastic tables & chairs do not do justice to the exterior, which is a work of art. The other smaller dining area is a little more cozy & has better seating. We went through the menu & it's a pure veg restaurant. I ordered a Veg Thali & Green tea while Gavin ordered Chole Bhature, Pav Bhaji & Pina Colada. The order started coming after 15mins. My Veg Thali had 11 items, rice, 1 roti, dal, mix veg, chole, paneer masala, salad, achaar, pudina chutney, sweet curd & papad. The rice was of decent quality. The roti was of a good size & soft. The dal was tasty. The mix veg had a good variety of veggies & was nice. The chole had flavor but was slightly undercooked. The paneer masala gravy was tasty but I wished the paneer was a little bit more fresh. If you are opening a pure veg restaurant, the paneer needs to be given the utmost attention. But then this place is far from the city so that is a factor to consider. The bhature was tasty but was perhaps fried a little longer than needed so didn't retain its shape. The Pav Bhaji also looked a little different from the norm, but had a decent taste. If your not a purist you won't be disappointed. There was a platoon of people marching in & out & the servers were like an assembly line. 20 workers to satisfy the hungry travellers. Prices are a little steep & touristy but then that's expected.

You'd easily get mesmerized by the sheer beauty this place is made up of. Made with bamboos and some other materials, provides an extremely unique look.
Wooden tables, and probably every other item(walls, pillars, etc) was made using bamboo/wood.
Washrooms are also available.
Had tried Pav Bhaji and onion-tomato uttapam over here. And to be honest, I didn't quite like the Pav Bhaji. The bhaji was served in quite a different fashion(liquid form) as opposed to a thick gravy that one would normally expect in a pav-bhaji combo. Also, when asked for extra bhaji, they politely denied serving it as it was only made up of a certain quantity, which was a negative for me. Feedback: The kitchen staff should be guided to prepare a little extra just in case.
The onion-tomato uttapam was comparatively better though. But didn't quite like the tea as well, personally.
The prices also didn't quite match my expectations, as the rates were on a higher side.
Purely for vegetarians
The entire place is extremely hygienic I must say. Also, the staff was also good in terms of their nature while talking.
Overall, it was one-of-a-kind place to eat and should definitely be experienced at least once...
Read moreDetailed Feedback for Cloud Country Restaurant, Sohra:
Cloud Country Restaurant has a lot going for it, starting with its beautiful ambiance that creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The veg menu is well-curated, offering a good variety of dishes with excellent preparation. Clean and well-maintained washrooms were another positive aspect that added to the overall comfort.
However, the dining experience was significantly marred by poor service and unprofessional behavior from the staff. Service was frustratingly slow, and when concerns were raised, the staff’s attitude was dismissive and rude. What made matters worse was their outright refusal to provide the complaint/suggestion register or the manager’s contact details when I asked to share my grievances. This blunt dismissal of customer concerns is deeply disappointing and shows a lack of accountability.
While the restaurant has potential, the management must address these issues urgently. Improvements in service efficiency, staff training, and a willingness to listen to customer feedback could transform this place into a top-notch dining destination. Until then, I’d hesitate to recommend it...
