A Sunday Sojourn…..
It was a quiet and crisp Sunday morning in early autumn.on the breakfast table wife proposed - how about exploring NH 16 Farm stay today? We had often noticed this place during our trips up and down south but never had the chance to check in. Excited at the prospects of some farm fresh food I did not mind that drive of 60 km on the national highway.
We checked in to the restaurant by 1pm. The welcoming waiters led us to a table beside a huge glass window that offered a panoramic view of the place. Patches of orchards with fruiting trees, green houses, tree houses, cottages , bamboo parlours and sitouts dotted the place and merged with the meadows that finally fused in to the distant blue mountains.
As our eyes were feasting on that pristine beauty of Nature , the waiter served mulberry juice in tall glasses. As we sipped the refreshing, yet unusual drink, particularly in this part of the country, we glanced through the menu that revealed a few more not-so- common dishes. Our explorative mood triggered us to try those instead of following the usual courses.
Paneer stuffed tandoori mushrooms with tangy exteriors and flavourful- sweetish interiors tasted marvellous. The aroma , flavour, texture and taste of steamed chicken literally made some dormant taste buds to spring in to life. For tandoori chicken they used the Banaraj breed of poultry in place of the usual commercial broilers. The pieces were quite soft and juicy contrary to my expectations.
Aah Sizzlers … I always get excited when I see a waiter taking the sizzling hot plate to someone’s table. Now it was our turn. We ordered one chicken and one fish n prawn sizzler to share between us. The strong aroma that preceded the dish was absolutely amazing. Nicely cooked long rice , fresh vegetables , charred bell peppers , chicken , fish, prawn all perfectly cooked with their sizzler sauce prepared in-house were a real treat to the palate.
Our flavour full gastronomical journey culminated with some nicely baked Rasgullas.
After a brief break, we were taken around the farm. Walking on the narrow grassy paths between plantations in itself was quite amazing. Varieties of mangoes, guava, Chikoo, banana, pineapple, dragonfruit, berries, cherries, star fruits, citrus were grown all over the place. While orchids and Gerbera gracefully occupied the poly houses, many varieties of flowering plants swayed in the open.
Varieties of poultry ranging from desi to Khadaknath to Chinese birds - backyard scavenging types to well cooped ones were kept on the farm to cater to the taste and choice of customers. A variety of swans and ducks were seen running about noisily. However, those were not for the table.
As the sun was gliding down the hills and a patch of dark cloud was threatening to rain, quite befitting to that ambience, we were offered a kadak adrak wali chai on the banks of the fish pond where shoals of local fishes were gathering for their evening feed .
We were approaching the end of a very satisfied and well spent day. To keep the memories alive we purchased some fresh fruits, a pack of mulberries, a bunch of blue orchids and some lovely indoor plants.
With that wonderful experience of the day and some fond takeaways and a promise to spend some winter evenings on the farm, we hit the...
