Strong food and location. But serious failures in hospitality, consistency, and brand alignment.
Café Diem has potential. The pumpkin soup, pommes Anna-style potatoes, and poached pear salad were all well-balanced, refined, and thoughtfully executed. The panoramic Nilgiri views create the foundation for a premium retreat-style dining experience, but that promise is consistently undermined by structural weaknesses.
Poor arrival experience and lack of welcome
Guests enter through a private residential garden dominated by “No Photography” signs. The escort treated us with suspicion, and the first words on arrival were, “Do you have a reservation?” No greeting. No smile. The tone was cold from the outset, and it never recovered.
A complete absence of guest service culture
At this price point, hospitality cannot be an afterthought. Our server showed no warmth, no engagement, and no interpersonal awareness. No assistance with the menu, no check-in during the meal, no farewell. The service was cold and transactional. Guests don’t return for food alone. They return because they feel seen and valued. When that is missing, especially in a premium setting, the business loses repeat value.
Inconsistent food and drink quality
Some dishes impressed. Others didn’t. The broccoli and cheese “poppers” were bland and lukewarm, and the coffee was weak. Recommending dishes that aren’t ready signals poor quality control and weakens the kitchen’s credibility.
A large menu that weakens cohesion
The menu is not unfocused, but it is unnecessarily large. This inflates expectations and creates operational strain. A tighter selection would allow more consistency, better training, and a clearer brand identity across the entire guest experience. The current sprawl contributes to a lack of cohesion that becomes obvious once seated.
What leadership must address
Café Diem needs to revisit its core proposition. What is the intended guest experience? Who is this space truly for? Locals, tourists, retreat seekers, or fine dining guests? The brand lacks clarity on what it offers, to whom, and why. Without this foundation, alignment across food, service, and ambience is impossible.
Leadership must define the guest experience from start to finish and build every touchpoint around it. Management needs to standardise guest-facing protocols across arrival, engagement, and farewell. Staff must be trained in interpersonal presence and hospitality fundamentals. The kitchen must stop recommending underdeveloped items and focus on consistency. The menu should be tighter and aligned with the positioning. Above all, the guest journey must be intentional, not accidental.
This place could be outstanding - I want it to be! The setting is exceptional. Some of the food already is. But right now, the lack of brand clarity and guest focus is holding everything back. Premium pricing must be matched with a premium experience, and that begins with understanding what experience you’re trying to create.
If they get this right, Café Diem could earn repeat visits from high-calibre guests, local and international, who come not just to eat, but to retreat. But until that alignment exists, they are offering flashes of quality inside a...
Read moreLocation : It's quite easy to locate, ample parking place available. Nestled away in seclusion with stunning views.
Ambiance : Oh boy! Was I taken aback. Just mind blowing. Have been to umpteen no of cafes / restaurants, but nothing even comes close to this. Even the walk to the entrance is just so beautiful. The place was so refreshing on the eyes & it just shows how much care, thought process & work was involved to give us such an experience. From the furniture to the walls, to the cutlery + water bottle + even the cloth, had a special touch to it. And trust me, am not one for ambiance. I care only about the food, but this was the affect this place had on me. We were seated inside, as it was raining outside so could not get the amazing view but nevertheless mind-blowing.
Food : The main highlight. We started off with tomato soup & on the recommendation of the owner, Mrs. Radhika we tried the Pumpkin soup as well! Just too good. If there is any place I would pumpkin soup again, it's here & here only. Post soup we had the cheese garlic bread & falafel platter. The garlic bread was spendid, the bread fresh & soft. The main course, we left it on them itself to give us the best, so we were served a Mediterranean pizza & ravioli pasta if I remember correctly! The sun dried tomatoes on the pizza & olive sauce in the pasta, these two just made the already perfect food even better! Deserts we had the pomegranate cheese cake (It couldnt be more softer) and ice cream(something related to sandesh & jaggery), just awesome. The closing of this spectacular meal had to be done with piping hot filter coffee in the cold weather!
Cost : It's a bit, slight bit on a higher side. A meal for four of us costed over 3k, but again trust me it was totally worth it. For the food, the experience & ambince offered it was worth every ruppee spent. They made us feel at home, spoke to us, made us comfortable & gave us an amazing experience.
Overall, anyone visiting Ooty / Conoor I would highly recommend this place! Just go here & you won't be disappointed.
P.S : Do book an appointment please well in advance.
Sorry for the photos, didnt want to waste much time of this experience over...
Read moreIf you are looking for a place to relax in a scenic setting while gorging on delicious food and drinks, make a reservation at Cafe Diem. Because they don't allow walk-ins. And for a good reason, as we learnt later.
What a lovely little cafe this turned out to be. While on our tea tasting tour, we enquired about a cafe where we could spend an hour or so in the evening. Cafe Diem, that's what the host recommended. The caveat? It is by reservations only. So, right after our tea tour, we called the cafe and made a reservation. Google Maps often goes awry in the mountains and so it did when we were relying on it to get us there. A phone call (from near Sim's Park) to the cafe fortunately saved us from going round and round in circles.
We fell in love with the cafe at first sight. Out came my camera. And so did the security guard asking us not to click pictures till we got to the cafe as it is a residential property. The place has been done up so tastefully that you so easily miss the "No photos here" sign as the focus is on the cute little things all over the place that lend it a distinct character! The proprietor Radhika Sastry is squarely to blame for the distraction.
So, after capturing myriads of images of the place in our minds' cameras, we got to the cafe and promptly went berserk with our phone cameras! ;)
Well, we settled down and soaked in the beauty of the setting. Set in the backdrop of the blue Nilgiris, this cafe fills you up with visual delight, even before you have placed your order. The food already has odds stacked against it as it has to match the heightened expectations. Fortunately, it doesn't disappoint.
Radhika happened to be there at that time and she herself recommended some of their own specialities. We absolutely devoured the food. What was supposed to be a tea/coffee outing turned into a sumptuous meal. Chef Paul and his team were brilliant. The overall experience was one we will remember for a long-long time. And every visit to Coonoor will surely have Cafe Diem on our itinerary.
