What a lovely name, right? You get to see various kinds of fishes at an aquarium - so you can experience various cuisines at The Culinarium. Sounds so much better than multi-cuisine restaurant
The atmosphere, the layout and the view are picturesque. We got a seat close to the window overlooking the green rolling landscape.
Actually, it's a bit of a surprise considering how much thought and executional detail has gone into the making of the restaurant.
We settle in and order several items. A Bloody Mary, a mocktail Virgin Mary, a Litchi Smash, an Orlona Pizza, bruschetta, Chicken Picatta, a veg burger, a veg pot pie, a hungarian goulash and a dessert. Which we'll come to later.
Then, we sat back and waited. And waited. Adam who handled the orders at our table seemed absorbed and stretched with more guests streaming in.
The staters came - the chicken and the bruschetta. I thought the bread could have been better. It looked pretty but the zing was missing. And the thinly sliced tomatoes made the bread a little soggy
I can't comment on the non veg dishes. But they did pass muster and the person who ordered the veg burger said that the patty was different. Not better or worse but unexpected.
The veg pot pie was a delight. Boxed in by round baked light crusty rounds. The veg cheesy sauce oozed over the sides in a good way. And it was a satisfying mix of vegetables like olives and beans and the occasional mushroom
The beetroot ginger ice cream was exotic. But the finale, an apple pie with coffee ice cream was freshly baked and steaming hot. Perfectly balanced and fully worth the wait - which was about 15 minutes.
But the rest of the wait did seem a bit longer than required. Maybe it's to do with the pace of Coonoor and our urban impatience kicks in. But then, since the price and decor matched that of the big city atmosphere, they have to raise their game.
Take a leisurely lunch and keep warm conversations going. That you'll have to come up with. But in a place like this, we hardly knew how nearly 3 hours passed.
Apparently we were lucky to get in on a day when the crowds were light.
It's the unexpected experience that lingers. The locals have probably got used to it. But for us, the out of towners, it provided a delightful few hours
Prices are on the high side. But then, you can't have...

Read moreWe visited this place once again on Diwali. You are served with three different tsps of butters accompanied with three different slices or two of bread as you sit at your table. We ordered the chicken mushroom pot pie for lunch followed by apple pie with icecream and creme brulle. The deserts were nice and the pot pie was good. The ambience is lovely. They took quite a while to serve. The dishes are way over priced for the measley quantities. The quantities are definitely not worth the price.
This was two years back -culinarium is an okay place to dine at, a little fancy ambience which sets your expectations high. But the food overall is ok and felt it was a little too hyped with reference to some of the reviews read. The portions are not filling at all and small. The signature mushroom chicken pie was good. The prawn bake was quite good as well. We ordered fries and got a serving of reheated or rather re fried fries... On returning it, our fries were replaced with the same kind of stale warm fries. Absolutely stale again!!! The veg pasta was just pasta and white sauce and some herbs, no veggies whatsoever. The pasta was strictly ok, the white sauce wasn't even tasty. The salted caramel ice cream was really lovely and the chocolate ice cream was ok. Worth a one time visit only. We drove down earlier on Wednesday and was told it was shut on Wednesday. No such information provided online. When we enquired we were given to understand that now due to covid times it is shut on Wednesday. Overall it's...
