The "Sego Tempong Mbok Wah’ is a restaurant situated close to the Banyuwangi Kota Railway Station. It's the most favourite destination for people to have their lunch after a long train journey to Banyuwangi City.
As we enter this place, we were welcomed by a wide variety of mouth-watering starters, e.g. 'pindang koyong', 'pepes tongkol', 'garang asam kikil', 'botok tawon', 'cecek sapi' and many else. Sitting in any table or just sit on a cushion, we felt the appealing dining atmosphere - the most bestselling and crowded restaurant in town! 🤩
I had the 'sego tempong' accompanied by the 'tongkol rica-rica', while my family tried the 'botok tawon' and 'telur pindang'. They were exquisite! The main course consisted in a 'garang asam kikil' and a 'pindang koyong' with its legendary red 'sambal tempong', which really thrilled us. And finally, it was followed by a bottle of fresh lemon ginger for drink. 😋
All the products were fresh and the dishes had the warmth of home-made food. The chefs took great care in selecting the best quality raw materials and ingredients. Overall, they were affordable in price and worth to try. 🤑
What a pity that the clean premises do not accompany the high quality of the cooking. No smoke-free areas available, a clowder of cats walking around the dining table. Thankfully the owner and hostess, a middle-aged charming woman, was willing to exchange some kind words and also sense of humor with her clients. 😄
Despite the poor hygiene practices, my family and I had a pleasant dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavours. For this reason, I highly recommend this restaurant and will...

This place is really OVERRATED and OVERPRICED!
I am from Jakarta and I do eat food from canteens and warung. The price here is like eating in a canteen in Jakarta. As I was in Banyuwangi and location is like a big warung, I was expecting something cheaper.
The template is rice, tofu, cucumber, some green veggies, and sambal. Then you can add on other options like squid, fish, shrimp, etc. My add ons were fish and shrimp, my friend's were squid and one egg, but the price for both of us were the same: IDR 40K for each.
Let's assume for each add on costs 10k, it means the Nasi Tempong is 20k. It is the same price like I eat in a better restaurant (Srengenge Wetan is a restaurant I recommend in Banyuwangi). Also, 10k for an egg is too much!
Shrimp is very small btw, looks many but so much skin and big head.
Taste? It is just a normal food. Wont come here again.
Oh also parking for cars is not easy here. Maybe just dont come, you are not...
Read moreI received a recommendation from a local to try Nasi Tempong Mbok Wah, located not far from the Banyuwangi City train station, and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is perfect for those who don’t like overly sweet flavors. A portion of nasi tempong comes with a generous serving of rice, ikan asin, lalapan, and the highlight—its incredibly flavorful sambal, which is perfect for spice lovers. Additionally, there is a variety of side dishes available, such as fried chicken, tempe, fried egg, and more. The portion sizes are extremely generous, so if you have a smaller appetite, I recommend requesting a smaller serving of rice. The prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and the delicious taste.
However, the service was less than ideal as the staff seemed a bit unfriendly, possibly due to the late hour when I visited. As for the ambiance, it was decent, though the cleanliness of the hand-washing area could use...
