Sushi Masa — Restaurant in Jakarta

Location: Penjaringan, Jakarta Utara, Indonesia. Of course, digital maps are a mainstay for finding restaurants. Because there are no signs from outside the area. Arriving at Jl. Tuna Raya, then we found the 5-story gray building where Sushi Masa is located.

The 1st floor of the building is occupied by the “Norwegian Seafood Store” containing fresh food ingredients such as seafood and some Japanese products.

There is an elevator to go up to the 3rd floor which is the location of Sushi Masa or the 5th floor where Shabu Masa is. Both restaurants are under the same auspices.

If you eat at Shabu Masa, you can still order various menus from Sushi Masa as well

Arriving at the restaurant, there were crowds of visitors occupying wooden benches. No wonder the restaurant is so crowded. Besides already having many fans, the opening time is also short during the day and night.

Like most Japanese restaurants, Sushi Masa offers a restaurant concept that is comfortable, neat and warm.

The use of light brown wooden furniture and Japanese interior ornaments are part of the restaurant. Diners can choose to sit in the bar area or at a regular table.

According to the menu, Sushi Masa is a complete Japanese restaurant. Salad, sushi, sashimi, donburi, fried food, udon, soba, chasoba, live seashell to Japanese style grill.

When looking at the menu, we found many variants of sushi and sashimi that are rarely found in Japanese restaurants in Jakarta. No wonder the price of the food is quite high.

The sushi or sashimi menu here is from Kinmedai fish, Hirame, Shima Aji, Kanpachi, Kohada, Suzuki, Sayori, Hobo, Taichiuo, and many more. Don't miss the Bluefin Tuna...

This review is for Sushi Masa (jan 2021), the latter part is for Shabu Masa which is upstairs, we have been a diner here for years and the quality of sashimi never disappoint, hands down one of the best sashimi in town (the fact they imported the fish themselves kinda explains it). If you are a fans of sushi and sashimi this is your go to places, the salmon is very good value with what you have, i can choose any sashimi blindly and i'll bet the fish is tasty & good quality. Smoked Duck is a suprising must try here, 30k for 3 pieces not bad and they are so good. The price is IMO relatively high for japanese food on par with 5* hotel japanese resto.

This second part review is for shabumasa (2019) but i guess pretty much the same, i noticed they have oden which i never tried before.

The maguro bowl is quite disappointing for the price offered, beef bowl is reasonably good, sushi and sashimi is as expected one of the best, i like the oden, they are offering very comprehensive choices and is great!

Price is expectably very pricey, IMO it worth the price for sushi, sashimi & oden. You will not be wrong for sushi here, if you lookin for a donburi there’s better option, did not try the shabu or grill yet, maybe...

While the store has opened other branch at Gading Serpong but our family still patronizing the main store from time to time. I personally reckon Sushi Masa as Jakarta best japanese restaurant without the pretense of vanity, trends, or high end dining that most of Japanese restaurants has. The price was definitely not cheap but on point. I got to savor good seafood ricebowl or chomping on crispy katsu/tempura with reasonable price. The price matches the quality. Recently the iced ocha were not refillable, instead it was offered by paid single large jug to share per table. The waiters were polite but always busy, sometimes it was hard to catch their attention. They knew the menu and could give you good recommendation. The drinks and desserts were variative. They had the largest fruit sorbets selection in Jakarta. Also sold at the first floor supermarket. Sadly other choice of desserts almost always out of stock. There were lots of times when the item on the menu was not available. They had Kakigori with interesting shape the last time we visited. It was really good. They had a dessert parlor just one level below that sold various items. It worthed a visit. Will definitely come back from time to time when our family would like to eat...
