Amazing! I’m from Los Angeles so leaving this review as an American and major foodie.
I was staying at the dive resort down the street and wanted to venture out for food.
They didn’t have most things on their menu but fried chicken and rice platter (lalapan ayam) and the capcay were the BEST BITES I had during my visit to Jakarta and Bali. I’m not even kidding or exaggerating.
This Warung has humble high quality comfort food I imagined to find on the side of the street in a developing country but I was unable to find for the rest of my visit to Indonesia.
In general, the food in Indonesia has been low quality and disappointing (except the fresh fruit and coffee). The food at the 3 star resort was just okay. Later I went to a 5 star resort in Ubud and the food was arguably worse, even the local cuisine there. It was also expensive at rip off tourist prices. I also stayed at Raffles Jarkarta and the local cuisine was acceptable but the Western food was just inedible and bad. I also ventured out to try street food in Jakarta and was unsuccessful at finding anything palatable that tasted good and wasn’t going to make me sick. I had just came from Singapore and went to hawker centres and Michelin star restaurants and was shocked at how the food in Indonesia was so bad.
Warung OKTA was one of the EXCEPTIONS. The auntie that made our food was very nice and apologetic she didn’t speak much English but the meal and service was a legitimate home cooked experience. I could not find better fried chicken or capcay anywhere else for the rest of my trip and I stayed at two more resorts. Even the sambal here was the best I’ve had. I loved it so much I ordered a second plate. It tasted very homemade and made with love, pure comfort food.
The price was dirt cheap too like the equivalent of $5 USD for everything although I don’t remember exactly. There were locals eating here, too!
I wanted to come back the next day before I left Tulamben but it was Kuningan and they were closed for the holiday. So very sad. I would not pay for an expensive taxi to come here since the menu is super limited and there is nothing else around but if it’s walking distance for you this place is worth it!
There is a sink for you to wash your hands. Use it. My friend got Bali Belly from some random restaurant in Ubud but we didn’t...
