A Culinary Experience Worth the Journey and the wait!

From the moment we stepped into MacNean House & Restaurant in Blacklion, it was clear we were in for something special. The ambiance struck a beautiful balance between refined and welcoming—luxurious without being stuffy. Crisp white table linen, tasteful decor, and a quietly elegant dining room set the tone for the evening.

We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairing, and from the very first mouthful, the flavors absolutely popped. Each course was a masterclass in precision, creativity, and balance. Dishes were beautifully presented on elegant tableware, enhancing the visual and sensory experience. The wine pairings were thoughtfully curated and elevated each dish without overwhelming it.

Before and after dinner, we enjoyed a cocktail in the beautiful outdoor seating area—a serene and stylish space that allowed us to relax and truly savour the evening. It was the perfect way to ease into the meal and to wind down afterward, extending our stay in the most delightful way.

What truly tied the evening together, though, was the impeccable service. The staff were warm, friendly, and clearly very well trained—knowledgeable about each course and wine pairing, and attentive without being intrusive. Their professionalism and genuine enthusiasm created an atmosphere that was both polished and personal.

A standout moment was when Neven Maguire himself took the time to greet guests at their tables. That personal touch made the evening feel even more special and reinforced the care and heart behind everything at MacNean House.

MacNean House doesn’t just serve food; it delivers an experience. From start to finish, it was "wow" after "wow." If you're looking for a place that treats dining as an art form—where every detail, from flavors to flatware, is curated with care—this is it. Rating: 10/10. Absolutely worth the journey. A must-visit for...

A Luxurious Dining Experience Like No Other!

We recently had the pleasure of dining at MacNean House & Restaurant, and I can confidently say it was the best meal I’ve ever had. From start to finish, the entire experience was exceptional. The atmosphere is elegant with crisp white tablecloths, adding a luxurious touch to the evening. The service was impeccable—attentive, friendly, and never rushed. With just one seating time at 6pm, you get to enjoy your table for the entire night, allowing you to truly relax and savor the experience.

The restaurant was fully booked even on a Tuesday, which speaks volumes about its reputation. We started with a delightful amuse-bouche of filo pastry with chicken, followed by warm, scrumptious bread. The coconut and sweet potato velouté packed an incredible punch of flavor for such a small dish.

For starters, we had quail, and they were very accommodating with our dietary restriction, replacing the pork with an extra quail breast—something few restaurants would offer without making you choose from the vegetarian menu. The scallops and lobster that followed were perfectly caramelized and seasoned, simply the best scallops I’ve ever had.

The main course was turbot with a lobster bisque, accompanied by creamy mash and vegetables. The fish was cooked to perfection. Dessert was another highlight: a pre-dessert of berry trifle and yogurt ice cream, followed by the indulgent chocolate swan dessert, which is a must for chocolate lovers. We ended the evening with mint tea and petit fours.

Overall, MacNean House & Restaurant is a truly special place. Chef Carmel and her team are doing an amazing job, and I would recommend this dining experience to anyone looking for a memorable and luxurious meal. A true gem in...

A dining experience and overnight stay to remember. The rooms immaculate, pristine, cosy and comfortable. The rooms are disgned to the highest of standards and make for a very enjoyable stay and experience. You really understand the difference from your typical hotel quality to 5 star quality at McNean House. The staff were all so lovely and friendly. In particular, the older barman who was so helpful and chatty and full of information about the area and things to do. Pre dinner snacks were a lovely touch while we had a drink in the intimate bar area while waiting for our table. The food was exceptional. By far the best dining experience I have ever had. Each course designed to perfection. So many different elements combined on one plate each consisting of different textures and flavours with such skill and technique. The fondant was my winner, even though I am never usually a dessert person. Couldn't fault any course and each was an experience and pleasure to try, the sorbets in between courses a great touch to cleanse the palate but so delicious. Couldn't fault a single thing. If you want to treat yourself to a night away, put it on your to do list. You won't be disappointed. A wonderful meal and stay followed with a trip up the stairway to heaven, only a few minutes drive away the following morning, made for a wonderful couple days break away. Booking well in advance necessary, we did by 8months, but is worth the wait. Oh and don't forget the breakfast, equally as delicious as the meal the night before. You won't be disappointed. Well done to all involved. Your staff and food are a credit to...

We went for B&B plus dinner. To start we had pre-dinner drinks in a very cosy lounge with an open fire which was lit. Drinks menu was extensive with cocktails and not expensive compared to Dublin. Dinner was a culinary delight of several courses. You can opt to pay for the wine pairing where you will receive a glass of wine specially selected for your food selection. I would highly recommend having the wine pairing. Every course was explained in detail as was each wine which included champagne and a dessert wine. Dinner lasted almost 4 hours and then we went back to the lounge for a nightcap or two. Nevin Maquire was saying hello and having a chat with everyone and was around most of the evening. He is very amiable and funny. We even got a personally signed copy of his Christmas cook book. The room was exquisitely designed, plenty of space, tea and coffee as well as complimentary water. The ensuite had a large rainfall shower. You could book a junior suite for €50 extra and that is very big with a freestanding bath tub and Nespresso machine. Breakfast in the morning was probably the best breakfast I ever had in a hotel. Porridge with Irish Mist, cream and honey was delightful as was the main course of scrambled egg with bacon. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will book for next year or whenever there is availability. The cost is very reasonable for the superb service and exquisite food and drink

I’ve put off reviewing our experience here as I felt we’d already given our time to McNean and expectations were not met on many levels. We stayed in the townhouse for one night. On arrival to the room at 6pm or so it was cold, damp and there was the most unbelievable and uncomfortable smell of bleach. The windows were still open. It was November. It was VERY cold. We sat for dinner and were eventually greeted and welcomed by Neven. He kindly offered us his baby recipe book as my partner was 6 months pregnant. I opted for the wine pairing and tasting menu and when the first course arrived I had to ask for a white wine as they hadn’t brought the first pairing, which was to be a Prosecco once the pairing is chosen. The wines for the pairing weren’t great so I ordered a bottle of Barolo from the wine list, to enjoy with my veal, which then turned out to be overcooked. (Pictured). We had drinks in the bar after the meal, and on returning to the room the smell of bleach was still overpowering. We had asked about a different room and were told they were fully booked. Breakfast the following morning was better than dinner the night before. Thankfully. The experience certainly wasn’t what we expected after a two hour drive there and back, and with an overall bill of €800, which we managed to pay after queuing for over 35mins to escape, sorry I mean check out.
