Great pub fare, great Atlantic view, but the PEOPLE were the BEST! Michael Gielty, former owner and father of the present owner, sat down with us at our table. After learning of my artist-husband Tom Dimock's interest in turn-of-the-century artist Robert Henri, and that Tom had served as artist-in-residence for a month in June at Cozad Nebraska's Robert Henri Museum, he offered to take us up the mountain to Corrymore House, formerly owned by artist Robert Henri. There my husband painted the same scene Henri painted of the village at the foot of the mountain on the Atlantic coast. Next time we saw Michael Gielty we commented on the beauty all around us in Ireland. He then stood by our table and sang a song which had been composed by a poet while on a mountaintop as he marveled at the beauties of Ireland. We were thrilled. The next day Michael's friend Johnny O'Shea sat with us and invited us to his Atlantic beach home that evening to talk of art and Achill history..to our delight he sang for us too. Through these two great men we connected with yet another Achill fixture.. Tommy "the Bouley" Mc Namara, who also invited us in to share what he knew of Henri. (No song here.) These experiences and numerous others made us feel more like "travelers" than "tourists". For great Guinness, fish and chips, atmosphere and other pub delights we highly recommend a visit to Guilty's Pub. We made it our base on...
Read moreI recently visited Gietlys Bar with high expectations, hoping to enjoy a pleasant evening with family upon arrival to the beautiful island of Achill. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. From the moment we entered until the moment we left, the level of service and overall organization left much to be desired. I am compelled to share my disappointment and frustration with others who may be considering a visit.
Firstly, upon entering Gieltys Bar, we were met with chaos. The staff seemed overwhelmed and unprepared to handle the number of customers present ( not very much considering it was a gaelic football matchday and a Sunday afternoon) There was a lack of clear direction or signage, making it difficult to navigate the establishment. Despite having made a reservation, our table was not ready, and we were left waiting for an uncomfortably long time. We had booked a table, and it wasn't ready or even down in the reservation book, which was dissapointing as my family and I had a higher expectation for this bar.
The service at Gietlys Bar was abysmal. The waitstaff appeared disinterested and inattentive, showing little regard for our needs.
Overall, the disregard for customers and the unwavering service regarding the key aspects of a bar was unintentful. Most definetly will not return to this bar

Read moreWe went to Gieltys just because it's marketed as the most Westerly bar in Europe, thinking it would be a bit of a gimmick but WOW what a place.
You feel like you've been welcomed into someone's home for dinner. Our server was just a delight and I wish she was my family😂 (I'm going to call her aunty as we didn't get her name).
Aunty has been here for years and remember when it was just a tiny little place - her house was "5th on the left" - so she's seen all the changes and it hasn't wearied her as she seemed genuinely happy we'd come to visit!
The food was truly excellent, none of this tourist rubbish because you know everyone is a one-off visitor. The portion sizes were huge but somehow we managed to scoff it all (plus dessert lol).
My seabass was perfectly done, all three fillets. The olive tapenade was a great accompaniment, as was the buttery mash and veggies.
Our view was lovely, the Guinness creamy (according to the husband) and the chit chat after at the bar with aunty and a local chap was so nice we've thought about moving here to retire 😊
A true Irish feel,...
