The Merry Monk — Restaurant in County Mayo

The service is appalling. The last 3 times we have to the monk we have had to wait ages for our meals. If you are having a carvery then you are fine because you help your self but if not God help you. Last week went with family that came over from UK, we ordered sandwiches, chips etc. And 1 children's gougons and chips. Everyone had finished their sandwiches after a long wait to get them. My grandson was still waiting for his meal.,we were still waiting on the chips. Husband went to enquire where they were ,to be told on there way. Nearly 15mins later ,still no chips or children's meal. I went up to complain and told will be on there way any minute, plus we were still waiting for our drinks. Eventually after another 10 more minutes the chips and children's meal arrived to be told the hand cut chips would be at least another 15mins. What a joke. Then today we went there for a pot of tea,a coffee and 3 scones. Tea and coffee came quickly but after 25mins I went and asked for the scones and was told they were on there way.after waiting another 10mins we had had enough. I paid for tea and coffee and has we were walking out the young girl came out with the scones, I told her no thank you. I sorry but we won't be back again .service is so bad and looking at past reviews they obviously don't really care because it looks like it hasn't changed for months. I won't be...

My sister suggested the Merry Monk for my mums funeral buffet after discussing using with her as they had had some great meals there before. Lorraine, was fantastic getting everything ready,.suggesting we use the conservatory. Gillian advised on menu. On the day of the funeral everything was perfect. The food, hot and cold buffet, was excellent. The exclusive serving staff were excellent. They made sure that everyone had wine, soft drinks or tea and then served the lovely food with so much choice and so fresh, really well. Lastly we used the tv in the conservatory to run a slide show my wife Claire made. Huge thanks to the young lady who helped us get the tv ready two nights before So I can heartily recommend Mr Lavelle and his team. They made a tough day so much better. They took care with all the guests and made the funeral buffet run like clockwork. Nothing we asked or guests needed was a problem. Just had Sunday dinner, I had roast beef and my partner had a seafood grill from their specials list. For me a roast dinner has to have roast potatoes as a staple and really should have Yorkshire pudding, but no. The beef I have to say was tender and nice, but the carrots and (I think it was) swede were boiled to within an inch of their lives. Nothing green. Mashed potato. I asked for horseradish sauce and it came in a gravy boat, about a quarter pint. My partner's salmon was ok as were the prawns but there was supposed to be scallops too, we think, but they didn't emerge. Presentation was basic. I nicked some of her courgettes so I could have greens! Service was a bit sloppy, spilling drinks as they were put down, spraying cleaning fluid on my partner's back as they walked by.
