The Villager Bar & Restaurant — Restaurant in County Westmeath

Very poor food. The fish tasted like it had been cooked in stale oil and was greasy and hard. The peas had a strange taste and were quite unpleasant and the garlic mayonnaise or tartar sauce...not sure what it was because it just tasted cheap. The chips were fine in fairness, but I couldn't eat them because the acrid taste and the (somehow both) rock hard on top and soggy underneath texture of the fish had put me right off. My advice is don't go there. We were charged full price despite one meal being almost entirely untouched...maybe I should have complained...but I thought when the waitress asked me how the meal was and I said mmm it's just ok that they may have asked further....but no. Don't...

Adding to my previous review. Happened to eat hear again and it was just unreal. The best burger I've ever had. Beautiful chicken wings and my gf had a fish platter which was awesome. Really enjoyed the beautiful meal I had here today.. I eat out alot and this is the best pub grub I've ever had.. I had the burger which was flavoursome, juicy and the bun was unreal. My girlfriend had the duck with the most amazing noodles flavoured with coconut and ginger.. simple done excellent, bravo to the chef.. other establishment should take a lesson from how to make simple so beautiful and not bland and over priced.. nice cosy place with lovely staff.. we will...

We sat for a 1pm lunch on sunday. Great selection of food and all promptly serve. Staff were really friendly though they were very much over run with a few sizable parties in the restaurant at the time.

Portions were fine (though would prefer chunky hand cut chips to the McDonalds style fries that were served) and the cod was excellent and very crispy. Soup was excellent and served with a lovely selection of breads. Dessert of apple and raspberry crumble was beautiful.

Overall an excellent experience, staff were very friendly and did not hassle us out of the table though we sat and chatted a long time after being served....
