Yew Tree Restaurant — Restaurant in Killarney Municipal District

We stayed in the hotel for my 30th birthday for 2 nights. Location is good, situated right beside the national park which is accessible via foot, jaunting car or bike. 30min walk to town and around €10 one way by taxi.

On arrival we were made to feel like an inconvenience (apart from bag boys who were friendly) with little direction from the front desk staff.

We went to use the spa facilities whilst waiting on our room. The spa was clean and followed covid regulations. However, is in need of some serious maintenance and several facilities were out of order.

The rooms are clean, spacious and well equipped, but in our opinion was outdated and missing that 5 star feel.

We booked into the yew tree restaurant that evening and welcomed to our table by lucien, who despite the kitchens effort we cannot fault. He was friendly, knowledgable and approachable. The restaurant matched the room in feeling dilapidated and energy draining, it felt more like a function room opposed to a fine dining environment. Food was good, but some would say overpriced. Our experience was topped off with a story which we imagine we will be telling for a very long time as a laugh with family. We tucked into our starters, my partner had ordered duck, which they had run out of, but was happy to try the quail which was the substitute. Half way through his, ‘quail,’ my partner thought something was a bit off. He asked for an honest opinion on the dish and how best to eat it, to which the servers face dropped, (not lucien). This is when we were told we were actually served pigeon and not quail. My partners also dropped and went a little grey. The restaurant staff were extremely apologetic and wanted to somehow fix this, to which we were served an alternative starter. This wasn’t necessarily want we wanted, we voiced some more free water would be completely fine and to move on, (the bottle of water was added to the bill for €8). The rest of the meal was very nice as was the experience with staff moving forward.

The following day we went down for breakfast, no buffet due to covid regulations, fast table service presented with a good menu. However food was terrible, and would not of been happy if paying the €22 per person if not included in our package.

For me, the concierge was the most disappointing part of the trip. We arrived at the desk excited to embark on a bike ride around the national park with the hope of some guidance on the best route to take. However the staff seemed disinterested and hindered at our questions. We got handed a map and went on our way. The map wasn’t clear to follow meaning it would of been helpful some direction from the concierge. The gears were faulty on the bike which we discovered 20mins into the journey meaning we had to return to the hotel, this could have been prevented if appropriate safety checks were carried out prior to our departure. We got lost along what seemed like a mountain bike trail (not suitable for the hotel city bikes) and 4 hours later arrived back to the hotel. Ok, if you want to eat there just know you will leave this place hungry. Yes, its about fine dining, but, if you go anywhere else for tasting fine dining, for around 75-85 euros you are given like 5-8 dishes. Here I paid 75 for a starter (Quail) and miniature striploin, yes, miniature, size good for a starter. Would not say it was really deliciouse as Quail was bit too dry. If striploin was good sized I would justify the price, otherwise its a joke. If you want to offer some fine testing then offer more dishes, even if its gonna cost bit more. I would really appreciate if they will apologies for our experience with this food. We are going through restaurants and doing independent review. This was just one of the worst. Waiting time over 30-45min for course. If 3 course you will wait from 1:30 to 2hours here. Taste of food just not what you would expect. If you like basic for crazy money. Wings topped with same sauce as ribs. We found same sauce in Lidl local shop. Waiters didn't even ask for sides for main dish. Ending eating ribs and wings with what you see on pictures.
