The Ballycarney Inn: We came across this truck stop/restaurant by chance and decided to stop for a late lunch. We got a warm welcome from Teresa, our waitress. The toilets were spotless. (Although previously, someone had landed a full roll of toilet paper into the loo, which the poor staff had to remove. People can be very careless! 😱 But even this task was undertaken speedily and without fuss!)
We didn't even look at the full menu, as the €12.00 dishes on the blackboard gave us plenty of choice.
The food was unpretentious but flavoursome nd the portions were generous. My companion had fish and chips with mushy peas and because of a comment on loving mushy peas, was given a double portion. - a very happy diner. My roast pork comprised three good slices of tender pork loin, with great gravy, apple sauce, mashed spuds, turnip, carrot and cauliflower. Nothing was over-cooked and because I obviously enjoyed the gravy, I was offered seconds! Neither of us even thought of dessert. But we had a good pot of tea and two very good coffees. The total price was €32.00. We found it hard to believe after the prices charged in Maynooth!
Teresa was very pleasant, efficient and chatty but never intrusive. She has a lovely way with all the diners. This was a very pleasant stop en route to our holiday. It was good value, good food and I have no doubt, we...
Read moreWe stumbled upon Ballycarney Inn during our return trip from the cliffs, and it turned out to be a delightful surprise — exactly the kind of place that makes a journey memorable. From the moment we walked in, the warm welcome from the staff made us feel like treasured guests rather than just passing travelers. Their kindness, genuine smiles, and attentiveness set the tone for the entire visit. The interior of the Inn struck me as delightfully unconventional and charming. It’s not just a typical pub or tea room — there are unique design touches and cozy corners that invite you to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere. It felt friendly, artistic even, and quite unlike the generic chain–style stops you often see along busy routes. But what truly won my heart were the desserts. Each sweet treat we had was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious — clearly made with care, high‐quality ingredients, and a sense of pride. Whether it was a creamy pudding, a delicate cake, or some pastry delight, every bite was a treat. In sum, Ballycarney Inn is a gem. If you ever find yourself in County Wexford or passing through the area, do yourself a favor and pause here. The staff, the interior, the food — all combine to make it more than “just a stop.” It’s a highlight in...
Read moreExtremely dirty got a bowl of soup I couldn't nearly see it there was that much dust on it the staff were very friendly but someone should show them how to clean their hands and appearance overall was very scruffy I didn't see the chef but I can only imagine any chef that would send a bowl out to customer like that couldn't take much pride or care about their job besides the bowl the glasses cutlery everything was filthy so needless to say I walked out hungrier than I walked in. I am not that fussy it would take a lot to put me off but I'm afraid the ballycarney did can't tell you what the food tasted like because I couldn't bring...
