It’s hard to put in to words the treatment we received at The Duck but I guess one word that comes to mind is unacceptable.
On arrival this is a lovely place with much atmosphere. And the evening started so well.
And then, as the mains finished, a server who later claimed to be the manager approached our table all in a tizz to say they were not aware we had brought our own bottle of red wine and they would have to charge corkage. We responded “no problem”.
That wasn’t enough for the manager. She said it was “cheeky” to bring our own wine and walked off. Her tone was so rude. Our table of five was left in shock. Not an air of graciousness was displayed by our host.
To say they didn’t know the wine was ours was simply preposterous. It’s not like we tried to sneak it in!!!!!
We walked through the front door of the restaurant with it opened and in our hand. We handed it to them and advised the server who was called to decant it that we had decanted it earlier at home. And when looking for our booking on their list when asked “are you staying with us” we responded “no”.
To say that we failed to tell them the bottle was ours was simply ridiculous. And couldn’t they see that our wine was not listed on their rather restricted wine list?!
The manager maintained her rude position towards us. She argued back and forth and then finally, when we sought clarity from her on what exactly we did wrong; the proprietor got involved. Sadly, she made no effort to hear our version of events and showed no interest in customer satisfaction. It comes as no surprise that the owner sided with their employee but to make no effort to recognise the view of the customer was shocking.
It was a disgraceful display of arrogance on the part of the restaurant and its team. It would seem the person who greeted us and the manager were not communicating well. These guys need to get their ducks in a row!!!
By the way, the food was nothing to write home about. The lamb was chewy.
In the end they charged us €50 corkage even after we spent well over €300 on two bottles of champagne and a second red.
All in all a terrible experience. It’s cost 900 euro for five. I’ll let you decide if the treatment we received made the meal...
Read moreI recently dined at The Duck, expecting a top-tier experience based on its reputation. Unfortunately, our visit was marred by extremely poor service, which overshadowed the food.
Upon arrival, we waited a full 20 minutes before anyone came to take our order. This initial delay set a disappointing tone for the afternoon. We had ordered some nibbles to start, but these never arrived and we had to remind the staff twice before they were finally brought to our table.
The issues continued when we ordered an additional glass of wine. It took three reminders before the wine finally appeared. This level of neglect is simply unacceptable for any restaurant, let alone one of this supposed caliber.
To cap off our disappointing afternoon, our desserts never arrived. After waiting far longer than reasonable, we decided to cancel them altogether. The food itself was decent, but the enjoyment was significantly hampered by the lack of service.
Overall, we were really shocked by the poor service at The Duck. For a restaurant that is supposed to be top-notch, this standard was far from what we expected. I hope they address these issues soon, as the current service level is well...
