Thai Underground — Restaurant in Pardes Hana - Karkur

One of the best Thai restaurants in the country, and one of the best I’ve been to in general.

Thai Underground is located on the former grounds of an agricultural school and has a lush garden that serves as the source for lots of the restaurant’s herbs and veg. The emphasis is on authenticity and all the flavors are distinctly Thai but have a slight Mediterranean touch - for example, a Penang fish dish included seasonal cherries. They also don’t shy away from Thai spice levels, so if you’re sensitive to spicy food make sure to tell your server and see which dishes are right for you - they’re generally very accommodating. There are also vegetarian and vegan options.

Every dish we had was delicious but some stood out - the Jerusalem artichoke pot stickers, the Penang fish stir fry with okra, cherries and rice, the pad thai, and the cocktail (a yummy aperol-chartreuse concoction) were all stellar. The egg roll was slightly pedestrian so I’d recommend a more adventurous choice!

Note that they don’t take reservations and the restaurant is always full, so try to come early or be prepared for a wait; we came on a Sunday night and it was packed. The service is friendly and knowledgeable, and the owners are around and happy to chat about their passion for Thailand and its cuisine and culture.

In short - a must-visit if you’re in the neighborhood, and even worth a trip especially if you love Thai flavors. The whole area is becoming a bit of a culinary hub with lots of interesting options, and the beauty of this historic Moshava is likewise...

אני כל כך עצבנית שאין לי מושג איך אני אמורה לאכול עכשיו. ביקשתי טייק אוויי של פד תאי טופו לבעלי. הייתי מאוד ברורה, חזרנו על ההזמנה גם כדי לוודא שכל הפרטים נרשמו - הרבה כוסברה, ללא רוטב דגים. לא ציינתי שום שינויים אחרים במנה. כשהגעתי למקום מסתבר שהניחו מהבקשה הזו שרציתי מנה טבעונית לגמרי, והסירו גם את הביצה, כנראה כי זה בדרך כלל מה שמבקשים. זו טעות תמימה, הכל בסדר. שאלתי את העובדת אם אפשר אולי פשוט לטגן לי רגע ביצה ולהוסיף בצד. היא אמרה שלא ממש, שזה רק להכין מחדש את המנה, ושזה יקח עשר דקות. עוד אני מתלבטת אם לקחת את זה ככה או לבקש שיכינו חדש, הגיעה המנהלת\בעלים\ווטאבר וקיבלה עדכון במה שקרה. מאותו רגע פשוט לא האמנתי ליחס שקיבלתי. מבחינתה "זה בעייתי" כי הם צריכים לזרוק מנה לפח. לא משנה איך ניסיתי להסביר שנעשתה טעות מהצד שלהם, זה פשוט החליק ממנה כמו טפלון. במקום זה היא השיבה לי בכל מיני טיעונים שמסבירים למה היא צודקת. כי אצלם "זה ככה". כי כל מי שמבקש בלי רוטב דגים זה תמיד כי הוא רוצה טבעוני. שאני הייתי צריכה לציין שאני כן רוצה את הביצה, ומשהו על זה שבאותה מידה למה לא ביקשתי גם גזר לדוגמה... לא לגמרי הבנתי, כי גזר כלול ברשימת המרכיבים, שזו בדיוק הנקודה שלי - ברגע שנקבתי בשם המנה התחייבתי לרשימת המרכיבים שלה, מינוס הרכיב שביקשתי להוציא. אם לא ביקשתי להוציא שום דבר אחר, אין להם סיבה להוציא שום דבר אחר. זה מקרה כל כך ברור של טעות מצד המסעדה, ופשוט לא האמנתי עד כמה לא נראה שזה מזיז לה. עד כמה אין מצידה שום מוכנות לנסות אפילו לבוא לקראתי או לתקן איכשהו את המצב. אמרתי לה שאני אקח את המנות כי לא ידעתי לאן אפשר עוד לקחת את הסיטואציה ההזויה הזאת, אבל שכעצה להבא, שמבחינה שירותית לדעתי זו טעות, שאם יש ספק אם הכוונה למנה מטובענת אז רק צריך להדריך את הטלפנית שתשאל ותוודא וכל השטות הזאת היתה נמנעת, ושחבל לערבב אוכל עם אנרגיה כל כך צורמת, שזה יוריד מהחשק לחזור אליהם. איכשהו עוד פעם היא ניסתה להסביר לי למה אני טועה והיא צודקת, ועוד פעם ניסיתי להסביר לה... ואז הלכתי, על סף דמעות(!) מרוב תסכול ועלבון. לא על זה שעשו טעות תמימה בהזמנה ולמי פאקינג אכפת מביצה או לא ביצה, אלא מהעובדה שמבחינתה ימות העולם, לקוחה יכולה לצאת מהמסעדה שלה נסערת ומזועזעת, אבל היא לא זורקת מנה, ומצידה שאני אחנק עם זה. הדבר האחרון שהיא אמרה לי זה "חבל שאת כועסת". עברה מאז חצי שעה ועדיין לא נרגעתי מספיק כדי לנסות לאכול. קראתי פה ושם על היחס שמקבלים שם אם במקרה משהו לא מסתדר מאה אחוז, אבל האמת עלתה על כל דמיון. אם אתם הולכים לשם - אולי כדאי שתעברו עם המלצר רכיב רכיב על כל מנה , או שהכי טוב, תשתקו עם הבקשות המטופשות שלכם ולא משנה מה, אל...

This is most likely the best Thai restaurant I visited in Israel. Great service, wonderful atmosphere and the food is so accurately made with attention to all the details of real Thai food. Very good seasoning job and fresh materials. I highly recommend you to be patient upon arrival, since this place doesn't get any reservations up ahead. The waiting time can be anywhere between 10 to 45 minutes but in the meanwhile you can get some drinks and there is a nice place you can sit until you're called for the table. Some dished are very spicy, so make sure you ask the waiter for more details about the dishes before ordering. Many dishes are vegetarian so anyone can easily find something good to try.
