We were spending the night in Bagnoregio and found this restaurant with 4.9 star rating and a great looking menu. The place was cosy and the waiter was nice at the beginning.
We ordered 2 menabrea beers and decided to try the tagliatelle and ravioli with wild boar. The beers arrived quickly but when we tried them, something was off. The smell was a bit like wet cardboard and we initially thought there was something on the bottle. When we tasted it there was a strange sour finish to it. We poured a bit out into a glass and saw it was murky and opaque - definitely not what a menabrea should look like.
My partner discretely called the waiter over and told him the beer was off and had probably oxidized, and asked him which beers they sold more often. The waiter apologized and said ichnusa was their best selling one so we asked if we could get that instead. He brought out the ichnusa and messina to us to "make sure" we ordered the right thing. We thought it was a bit strange but reaffirmed the ichnusa.
The ichnusa arrived and while it was a bit flat, it didn't taste off or smell strange so we enjoyed it. The food arrived and it was absolutely delicious. The tagliatelle was rich and the ravioli had a great balance between the cheese and the ragu.
The waiter came to check on us halfway and we told him everything was great and the food was very tasty. When he came back to clear the plates, my partner asked if we could order a dessert. The waiter told us that we should go to the "vetrina" to look at the desserts so we don't change our minds after if we don't like what we order.
This was the second jab and it soured rhe experience. We did not return the beer because we didn't "like" what we ordered, but because it was off. We didn't make a big fuss and we were very quiet when we told the waiter about the issue so as not to draw attention from other patrons.
We decided not to order dessert due to this comment and went to pay. To be fair, the owner at the counter apologized for the beer and we told him it was no problem and everything else we got was really good. The original waiter then gave us our bill. It was flat 40 euros for both and we asked to split in 2. He did not seem pleased and it took a moment before he obliged. We don't know why as it was an easy division.
After leaving, we found out they charged us for the "artisanal" beer of 5 euros. The menabrea was 4 euros and the ichnusa unfiltered was 4.5 euros. In the grand scheme of things, this is only one euro extra that we paid and we didn't pay for the off beer, but it really hammered in that we were being punished for sending the beers back and we were unpleasantly surprised to see this behaviour.
Our stay at bagnoregio was very pleasant overall and as noted, the food and initial service was great at this restaurant, but my advice to the restaurant would be to work on their service. An otherwise brilliant meal turned sour when it could have easily been the end of story with the swapping of the bad beers to a new fresh one. Also to say that the beers could have been stored incorrectly by the supplier or been a bad batch from the maker, so we in no way blamed the restaurant for this and as noted the food was very good and...
Read moreGreat restaurant for vegetarians/vegans or people just looking for some vegetables! It’s a dream come true for the traveler weary from meat, cheese and carbs.
If you need a break from the daily diet of pizza, pasta, and panini, this place has an excellent variety of vegetable dishes and also a very nice selection of desserts.
The Puntarelle really hit the spot for me. It was the perfect portion, and I could’ve stopped there, but we also got a Margherita pizza. It was also fantastic.
The staff were very kind, helpful and gave great suggestions for us! Highly recommend this...
Read moreThis was a jewel on the crown during our day trip visit to Civita di Bagnoregio. It started of course with delicious food, where we enjoyed the pasta and pizza options. But what stuck with us what the service and the love we got from the head chef, He personally gave us two special treats. Some extra pasta to try, homemade biscotti and also limoncello at the end without any extra cost. The chocolate dessert that we ordered at the end was also delicious. In all I would say, you remember how people made you feel and we will remember this...
