La Fucina — Restaurant in Cison di Valmarino

We had a very unpleasant experience, which led us to leave before even ordering. I’ve never written a review for a restaurant before, but I believe this needs to be said:

The restaurant’s maitre d’s behavior was notably poor, marked by extreme arrogance and a lack of professionalism.

The restaurants address provided on Google led us directly to Hotel Castel Brando, which, as it turns out, doesn’t offer parking for the guests of the restaurant located within the castle. Confused by the GPS directions and the lack of parking, we sought assistance by calling the restaurant. The maitre d’, in a condescending manner, then informed us that guests should not enter by car but should use an elevator located on the mountainside beneath the castle.

This information wasn’t clear to us since we don’t live in Italy, had never visited the castle before and therefore relied solely on the address given online. Yet, the maitre d’ behaved as though this should have been common knowledge.

Despite the initial confusion, we found our way to the restaurant. Upon arrival, instead of welcoming us properly, the maitre d’ continued his unsavory behavior by reiterating that we should have known better about entering by car.

However, the most significant issue arose when we brought our dog, which we btw. had clearly mentioned when making our reservations.

While passing our table, the maitre d’ rudely instructed us to place our calm, resting dog in a corner, alleging that he would disturb other guests. To clarify: our dog was lying calmly and wasn’t visible to other guests as he was positioned beneath our table. We now felt even more unwelcome.

Baffled, we asked if the dog was really permitted in the restaurant. The maitre d’ then falsely claimed that dogs aren’t normally allowed and that he had made an exception, implying we should comply with his commands. This claim is, in hindsight, entirely baseless, as online it’s clearly stated that dogs are allowed.

Given the chain of uncomfortable events, we felt entirely unwelcome and decided to leave without ordering.

As we prepared to depart, the maitre d’ followed us outside and tried to justify his actions, emphasizing that he allowed us to enter by car and let our dog in, as if we should be grateful for his “generosity” – a notion that, in hindsight, seems laughable.

Considering we were potential paying customers, we expected a more courteous approach, especially considering the restaurant’s own error in providing the incorrect address on Google.

Due to this unfortunate experience, we have canceled our plans to stay at Hotel Castel Brando next spring.

We were staying at CastelBrando and thought it would be nice to enjoy a meal at the conveniently attached La Fucina. We made reservations, dressed accordingly, and arrived on time. We were greeted and promptly sat. While the food was decent and priced fairly, the service has left me scratching my head. We had read the menus and were ready to order, but the waiter truly made us feel unwelcome. We didn't make any special requests, didn't ask questions, and were trying to be pleasant. I will not return and cannot recommend. I see that most folks had a wonderful meal, we did not.
