Al Contrario — Restaurant in Comunità delle Giudicarie

A recommendation from the manager at Cantina Torboli led us to book into this quaint restaurant about a half hour drive north of Riva Del Garda.

Right from the outset we were treated almost like friends coming over for a nice dinner. The "meal ticket" was new to us, with no traditional menu being presented. However, we were wrong to have any doubts from the outset. The chef owner (one of two forming the husband/wife team in the kitchen) was proactive with recommendations on drinks and we opted for 8 courses to satisfy ourselves.

Each dish was original and well balanced, playing on the classic five food senses without leaning too heavily in any one direction. Our favourites included an umami jelly noodle cube, cubed fish with a thyme meringue, a sweet roll take on banh mi, a hearty potato soup with zingy yuzu, super fresh handmade mushroom ravioli and a delightfully charred veal and eggplant mix.

Neither of us are dessert fans but even those impressed us, with one akin to a deconstructed lemon cheesecake with young figs, and a very delicate and delicious macaron.

Essentially, every single dish blew us away and we left feeling...

We run into this restaurant with no plans, what a luck!

The chef is from Rome, and he mixes South Tyrolean cuisine with his home Roman traditional cuisine. The result is an explosion of taste, surprises and fun. Last two points, one on the desserts, delightful, the second on the service, always kind and prompt.

Wir haben uns von den Bildern bei Google blenden lassen. Leider entspricht die Realität bei weitem nicht den Erwartungen. Das Essen war zwar hübsch angerichtet, war aber absolut geschmacklos. Das Konzept des Menüs ist: viele kleine Portionen. Trotzdem könnte man erwarten dass der Fleischhauptgang größer ist als ein Teelöffel.

Auch die Einrichtung passt nicht zu dem was das Restaurant darstellen will. Der Service war auch eher unbeholfen. Bei einem blind menu sollte der Kellner in der Lage sein eine Weinempfehlung zu machen. Dafür musste der Koch kommen, um dann einen Standart Weißwein zu empfehlen.

Alles in allem war es kein Erlebnis und auch keine geschmacksexplosion wie in anderen Rezensionen beschrieben. Es war eher ein durchschnittliches Menü zum halbwegs satt werden für 120€ inkl. Wein und Kinderessen.

Positiv hervorheben muss man aber ihre kinderfreundliche Art. Unser Kind hat gutes, kindgerechtes Essen bekommen. Und sowohl Kellner als auch der Koch waren wirklich...
