Whether you are looking for a good starting point for a hike through nearby mountains or a quiet and friendly place to stay away from the crowds at nearby Lago di Garda, Locanda Genzianella in Costa, a small traditional village of some 40 inhabitants, is a great choice. A 20 minute drive on a paved road from the lake at Gargnano (just follow signs to Costa) brings you to a secluded mountain world with great views, clean air and refreshing atmosphere (and whilst on the road you will be rewarded with great views of the Lake Garda and Monte Baldo mountain above the eastern coast). Although the village is small and its few streets are narrow, there is sufficient place for free parking only few steps away from the Locanda. What gives Locanda Genzianella even bigger charm (in addition to simply, but fully functional and well equipped rooms with small terraces offering widely open views) are hosts Maura and Giacomo. The meals they prepare reflect the (tasty!) regional cuisine and the ingredients they use are all genuinely local - either grown by themselves or by nearby local residents. Maura and Giacomo speak English and German, so even those who do not speak Italian will certainly be well taken care of - my wife and I speak Italian so already after few minutes we felt like we had been welcomed already many times before. Don't expect a 20 page menu for the dinner, but simply let the hosts suggest the four or five main dishes they have planned for the day and whichever you choose, you'll be glad you did. Do not miss the plate of local cheese and salami beforehand and one of the desserts afterwards. The house wine was also a good one. Although our trip was mainly centered around the Lake Garda, we were tempted to make a short walk above the village and that was yet another pleasant surprise we are glad we opted for. For a true home-like experience we definitely look forward to our next stay with Maura and Giacomo at Locanda Genzianella in Costa above Gargnano on the Brescian side of Lago di Garda.

We had the pleasure of staying at Locanda Genzianella for 3 nights. Maura and Gjacomo took great care of us and made us feel very welcome. We woke up to a beautiful view from our balcony and delicious breakfast with local cheese, cold cut, eggs, fruit, coffee and the most tasty apple juice. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the mountains, the beautiful nature and the experience of staying in a small local community. We loved all the meals at the Restaurant and especially the pan cotta with blackberry was an all time favourite of ours. We are definitely coming back soon! Ciao from Denmark, Vitus and Emilie

"I immedeatly felt at home", we heard another guest say. Ahhh, she too, we were thinking. Maura|| and Giacomo know the art of making everybody feel at home - no matter where they come from. And at the Locanda you find a mix of interesting people you seldom find down at the lake. Nature lovers, people who prefer the quiet, who like listening to bird songs, inspect the many wild flowers, enjoy the stars and the myriads of fire flies. On the cosy terasse in front of the Locanda you easily start a conversation with strangers. A huge blackboard on the wall lists the dishes for the day. We met guests who since 11 days refused to try out any other restaurant. "Why go anywhere else when you can eat like that", they explain and point at the blackboard. We had planned to cook ourselves, but quickly gave up on that idea. Rabbit, filled noodles, sardines, risotto, deliciously prepared vegetables, osso bucco ... - all prepared in a down to earth mountain style with an adventurous twist. Before we forget, on Friday evening, Maura and Giacommo heat the pizza oven, it is pizza night. We recommend the gorgonzola and apple pizza. We came here first four years ago and see how the hosts come up with new ideas every year. Besides the new pizza oven, we found a new wine card and the announcement of an artisan beer tasting. Did we write enough about the food? No. The breakfast is stunning too. Maura raises early and bakes cakes for the breakfast buffet. One more delicious than the other. The freshly made bread is still warm, the yoghurt also home made, and with lots of fresh fruits and the local honey, you can prepare a healthy muesli. Or you prefer scrambled eggs, goat cheese, ham? No problem. ||We stayed at the appartment near by the Locanda, and really liked it there. There is a lot to do in the area if you like hiking, mountainbiking, motorbiking, chatting, practizing your Italian, horse riding, dosing in the sun or writing your next novel. It is a beautiful spot and Maura and Giacomo (and Enrica and Andrea) have created something unique and special in this small village. "Why is there a pirate flag in front of the house?" I asked Giacomo. "We sometimes like to do things a...
