The food is good but the service that we received was bad is definitely not up to par with what you would expect in a one star michelin restaurant. We are not even high-maintenance, but what happened that night would have been bad service in any restaurant. Maybe we were just unlucky with one of the serving ladies (M.), who did not seem to care about the experience for the guests at all. It seemed that tables had to be cleared as quickly as possible to suit her: We had asked if we could keep a paper menu at our table to follow the courses, which was fine according to the other staff, but she came 3 times asking if she could get it until we let her have it. She did not wait for all the guests to be done with their dishes before starting clearing out the plates. This happened on at least 3 occasions/courses so it wasn't just a one-time unfortunate timing. She removed the butter when we would have loved to keep it. Didn't ask. She was running around the place as if she were working in a fast food restaurant. She decided it was a good idea to shake out and throw the leaves of the fern that was next to us on the floor in our direction during the dinner. I must say that we also had two other ladies serving us at the beginning who were really nice. I would still expect a certain attention to detail in such a kind of restaurant to be taught to all staff so that guests do not have to feel rushed or like...
Read moreImagine a little hamlet from a Pieter Bruegel landscape and you get the idea. The word 'charming' can be misleading and sometimes a smokescreen for something else but it is the most apt expression for our accommodation. We were lucky as the other chalets (my expression) were empty so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Spotless, sympathetically furnished with odds and ends. ||||Very modern bathroom - with a weird sink like a narrow deep bucket - shaving in it was ....interesting. Wi-fi only at restaurant which is 50m away.||||We sat outside and had breakfast in the morning sunshine and it really was a wonderful feeling of being in a different world in a different century. Also, there is something childishly exciting about going downstairs to bed!||||The restaurant (not the main restaurant which is 200m up the road) served excellent food & wine and had excellent outside spaces areas to chill out. Friendly efficient service.||||With regards to the overall theme the challenge for the owner will be to resist the temptation to keep extending and building new properties which would only dilute the organic vibe.||||NB You probably would not want to walk to Cormons as the road is bendy with no...
Read moreWe just returned from a five-night stay at La Subida. It was the highlight of our 2-week trip to Italy. La Subida is special. It's a family-run inn with two outstanding restaurants. The familial character spreads throughout all of the staff and everyone is exceptionally warm and hospitable. It seems like all of the cottages have been updated and now have air-conditioning and contemporary styling. Everything was beautiful and well-maintained. Of the five nights we were there, we ate at the trattoria two nights and the osteria one night. The food was simply outstanding. We sprung for the cooking lesson, which included meals at the trattoria, and that was a lot of fun and well worth it. Each of our multi-course dinners at the trattoria lasted about 3 hours and was highlighted by custom-picked wines for each course by Mitka, the sommelier who is on staff and son of the owners. My wife and I both concluded that we should have spent our entire two weeks at La Subida and enjoying the Collio wine region and its many delights. Thanks to the Sirk family and the...
