Fre — Restaurant in Dogliani

We had dinner with my wife last night. The location is outstanding, second to none with one of the most beatiful views from the terrace. Service is very good with very attentive waiters. We got 3 or 4 small extra amuse bouche. All very tasty. I took the di la menu (fish, 115 €). For my wife they modified the vegetarian one and made it vegan (95 €). In both cases 4 dishes (starter, primo, secondo and dessert). My main complain is the cost and some of the dishes. For example my aperitivo was a glass of contratto sparkling wine. They charged 12 € and served less than 0.1 l. I took the wine pairing for 60 € including 4 glasses. I got nice wines, well selected but extremely few, around of 0.1 l of very inexpensive wines. For example i got a glass of reva barolo 2017 which they produce (the restaurant is in the reva resort). The bottle sells for around 35€ and i paid for a 0.1 glass 15€. My starter was not so tasty and extremely small. My first pasta dish was very good and my main fish dish was excellent and cooked to perfection. After that we got a pre dessert in the kitchen, which was nice. However we finished on a very very low note with a very bad main dessert made of gelly and canned peach. We were very disappointed. In the end instead of the typical small chocolates we got some brioche. I personally did not like it. In all it was a rather averge very expensive experience and i would not come back or recommend it. In the area there are way better alternatives like Massimo Camia and Davide Paluda (both 1 star with way more courses for the price) and Antica Corona Reale (2 stars with menus around 110).

Update, considering the answer from the owner below i want to state that i did not have twice the first wine and that i only had twice the Barolo thanks to a very nice waiter. A dir poco straordinario! Io e mia moglie ci siamo recati al Fre domenica 21 maggio dopo attento studio sugli stellati della zona. L'occasione era il nostro primo anniversario di matrimonio e avevamo intenzione di festeggiare nella maniera più bella e interessante possibile e direi che la scelta del Fre è stata estremamente azzeccata. Abbiamo optato per il percorso degustazione da 10 portate con abbinamento di 8 calici di vino. Tutto perfetto, il cibo ovviamente di qualità eccelsa come ci si aspetta da uno stellato; il servizio e l'accoglienza di livello altissimo; i vini di qualità altissima e i relativi abbinamenti erano veramente pazzeschi. Il personale è stato veramente premuroso e gentilissimo durante tutto il pranzo. Con sommo piacere abbiamo anche avuto la fortuna di assistere alla preparazione di uno dei dessert da parte dello chef Francesco Marchese direttamente al nostro tavolo, potendo così ammirare, anche se per pochi minuti, la maestria con cui manipola le materie prime. Verso fine pranzo poi, inaspettatamente, poco prima del digestivo mentre eravamo fuori dalla porta del ristorante, abbiamo nuovamente incontrato lo chef con cui siamo riusciti a scambiare piacevolmente due parole, dimostrando ancora una volta l'immensa cordialità e disponibilità di tutto il personale. A fine pasto ci hanno omaggiato di una sorpresa inattesa: sapendo che eravamo intenti a festeggiare il nostro anniversario ci hanno personalizzato uno dei dolci ad hoc e ci hanno fatto trovare sotto quel piatto un biglietto di auguri firmato da tutto lo staff; gesto molto semplice ma allo stesso tempo da noi molto apprezzato.
