A genuine traditional albergo in the village square where we spent a wonderful 2 days in May. Off the beaten track, it probably isn’t a place that you would visit unless ski-ing in the winter, or on a walking holiday, or, like us, making a special point of visiting the English War Grave cemetery nearby at Magnaboschi. Very few English speaking people ever seem to come here.||||Foza is a tiny village 10 km east of Asiago, and around 20km from Magnaboschi. Set on the Asiago plateau 1500m up in the Dolomite mountains, the scenery is stunning and very evocative of the “Sound of Music”. Hotel Alpi is a family run, small hotel in the centre of the village overlooking the square. The hotel is a traditional building with small bar and large dining room downstairs, and a small patio which is great to sit out on with a glass of Prosecco and watch the world go by in the square. We had a lovely front facing family suite which had been tastefully refurbished and was better than many a 3 star hotel in the UK, although the bathroom shower was compact and would not accommodate anyone of a large build.||||What makes this hotel such a find is the food! Simple, but made with the very best ingredients. It helps to know a little Italian as only one member of the family really has any command of English (and he was away) but the brother (who is also the chef) made us so very welcome and provided delicious meals, served by the sons in the evening, and Grandma in the morning. Breakfast is basic Continental but with the best large croissants ever! ||||For those that are interested, Magnaboschi is a moving War Memorial for those British soldiers who died fighting with the Italians against the Austrians in the Battle of Asiago, World War 1. We had a relative buried there whose grave had never been visited by the family so it was an important visit for us. The cemetery is south of Cessuna and we had a lovely day visiting the cemetery and wandering around the remains of the old trenches in the nearby woods. There is an amazing restaurant on a hill top nearby that serves great food with stunning views.||||Our stay truly was a lovely experience: we do recommend Hotel Alpi as very good value for money and a real taste of traditional Italy. From Foza we travelled to Venice for a few days – and that is...
Read moreWe left Innsbruck, Austria with train tickets to San Marino (the micro state). We arrived in San Marino the tiny Italian village instead. Hotel di Alpi sent their son to come pick up two lost Americans on the side of an empty highway. If it weren't for their hospitality we would have slept under a bridge!||||The hotel is full of character on a very small street in Foza. We slept with the windows open in June and it was perfectly cool. I stuck my head outside at around 10pm to silence. Wonderful silence.||||The restaurant is also staffed by the family. It was wonderful Northern Italian pasta, bread, and cured meats. I enjoyed every meal we were served. ||||I paid 110 Euro for two nights. Granted it was still the "off season", but still- fantastic deal.||||Thank you again for the hospitality of this family run hotel. Although we wound up here in accident, it has been my favorite place. Wish I was drinking a caffe late on their front porch...
