Entering La Taverna dei SaZi is a curious experience right from the start. You open a small, old-fashioned wooden door, its frosted glass hiding what lies beyond. There’s a strange, almost cinematic feeling—as if you’re about to step into a forgotten chapter of L’Aquila’s past. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and authentic. The space is tiny, with only eight tables, each with simple, somewhat vintage chairs. The walls are filled with hanging photos, and the décor is minimal yet full of character. A handwritten daily menu appears on a small blackboard, adding a personal, almost nostalgic touch. The food is honest, well-prepared, and served with warm attention by the host. The local wine complements the dishes perfectly, all at a very reasonable price. One subtle yet striking element is the harmony of colors throughout the space: the floor tiles, chairs, walls, and even the ceiling share a palette that quietly ties everything together. There’s no doubt—this is a charming spot to stop for a meal while visiting L’Aquila. Not just for the food, but for the experience of stepping briefly into a different time.

We were planning to visit this place for a month, and we finally grabbed the last available table for the day on Ferragosto. The owner was extremely funny and nice, and spoke English. He translated everything for us, we settled on Tortina verza and a refreshing antipasti made of watermelon and sheep milk cheese. The flavors were subtle and you can clearly feel the high quality of cheese used. For primo we went for their house lasagna and a pasta dish with black pepper, sausages and sheep milk ricotta. The lasagna was extraordinary, but the star of the entire meal was the sausage pasta. That was one of the best pastas I had in Italy. They change the menu every month (I guess) but if you find the pasta with sausages (I think its called some pasta shape del lupu) get that thing. The prices are dirt cheap, and I have nothing to complain about. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit and the food is literally delicious!
