In a region overflowing with wine and pride, Arnaldo Caprai stands apart — not because they shout the loudest, but because every drop whispers excellence.

We arrived and were immediately greeted by Lorenzo — not just a guide, but a charismatic storyteller with the wine wisdom of a sommelier and the charm of someone who actually cares. He welcomed us with a refreshing sparkling rosé and cool water — a small gesture, but one that already placed this visit in a different league.

From there, we walked among the vines where the mighty Sagrantino grape thrives. Lorenzo didn’t just share facts — he shared reverence. The history, the research, the innovation. You don’t just taste the grape at Caprai. You feel its roots.

Inside the facility, the contrast between red and white wine production was explained with precision. Then we descended into the cellar — a cathedral of French oak barrels — where Lorenzo revealed Caprai’s most unique collaboration: a pioneering method co-developed with Michel Rolland, the world-renowned oenologist and maître à penser of global winemaking. Born in Libourne, France, Rolland brings centuries of tradition into every barrel, and that partnership is felt in every drop.

Then came the tasting: five glasses pre-set like an invitation to joy — one white, three reds, and a sweet dessert wine. Lorenzo guided us through each one with authority and delight. Not just a tasting, but a narrative. Not just flavours, but philosophy.

We left with eight bottles and that rare feeling of having experienced something alive. Caprai may produce over a million bottles a year, but there is nothing industrial about what they do. It’s legacy in motion. Land in dialogue. Sagrantino, evolving.

Founded in 1971 by the now 93-year-old patriarch — who still checks in — the estate is now steered by his children, combining tradition with momentum. 68% of the wine remains in Italy. Abbiamo visitato questa fantastica cantina un sabato di aprile 2022; eravamo 2 amici entrambi appassionatissimi di vino e soprattutto del mitico Sagrantino di Montefalco, motivo per il quale abbiamo deciso di recarci qui, da Arnaldo Caprai, da anni uno dei massimi esponenti dal punto di vista qualitativo di questo vitigno in Italia e nel mondo. La cantina è davvero bellissima, un vero esempio di come fare turismo con il vino: parcheggi ampi ed asfaltati, costruzione restaurata e moderna, tutte le aree verdi ampiamente curate e ben tenute; davvero un fiore all'occhiello! Anche al suo interno l'ambiente è molto speciale: elegante, curato, raffinato, con tutte le varie bottiglie di vino esposte in vari formati comprese le edizioni limitate (erano presenti anche altri prodotti, ad esempio il loro olio EVO). Io ed il mio amico abbiamo optato per la degustazione compresa di stuzzichini ed abbiamo avuto occasione di assaggiare anche l'edizione limitate Dante, un extra dovuto al periodo pasquale (una fortuna non da poco). La ragazza ed il ragazzo che ci hanno seguiti durante tutta la degustazione sono stati davvero gentilissimi presentandoci e spigandoci vino per vino, lasciandoci il tempo di fare i nostri assaggi e facendoci sentire a casa; sia il Rosso di Montefalco che il Sagrantino sono davvero superbi (la riserva è davvero speciale) tantè che a fine percorso abbiamo acquistato qualche bottiglia da portare a casa nella nostra collezione. Prima di andarcene, abbiamo approfittato della bellissima giornata per fare una passeggiata lungo le vigne sottostanti percorrendo la strada che dal cancello in basso porta fino al parcheggio dalla cantina stessa e poi ci siamo presi la libertà di visitare la bellissima terrazza sopra la cantina presso la quale fanno delle degustazioni molto ampie e strutturate (con l'intento di tornare per fare questa esperienza nei prossimi mesi). Che dire?! Tutto davvero straordinario: professionalità, gentilezza, vino, struttura, ESPERIENZA....questa la parola fondamentale, l'esperienza che ti fa rimanere un ricordo indelebile di come saper gestire e coniare turismo e valorizzazione dei prodotti e delle tradizioni locali. First time for me visiting the estate as a tourist: the whole experience was sensational. Not only because we’ve been lucky enough to meet the producer marco caprai, but as because trough the different steps of the tour we get more and more involved in Sagrantino making process. Thanks to our guide we discovered the history and the reasons of success for one of the most renowed italian estates. Sustainability the way they do, was my favourite part; wines at the end estonishing; Montefalco Rosso Riserva a confirmation of excellence.
