Taking the cable car to go to the first level on the way to reach the top of Mount Etna is a scary but worthwhile experience. Scary because usually there are high winds and the cable cars themselves sway and creak and make scary noises.
But it sure beats climbing 2500 meters on foot. The cable cars take about 15mins to reach the top and may stop for a few seconds on the way.
Up at the top, it gets really cold. We went there 3rd week in March and it was really cold with the wind chill.
From this level, one has to take a bus to go to the top of the mountain. Taking this bus is part of the guided tour. You are not allowed to go to the top on your own. You can buy tickets at this level at the cafe.
If you are going outside at this level to take pictures or taking the bus to the top, thick jackets and gloves are a must.
The cable car tickets are expensive (40 euros per person) but it is worth it.

35 euros tour bus takes you from catania center to cable car ....
30 euros cable car to take you to the 3000 meters where you have a small restaurants and the small busses or jeeps ....
34 euros the jeeps or small busses ( 20 persons max) takes you to the crater .... included in the price there is a guide who takes the groups for 25 minutes to turn around the top of crater ....
The jeep takes you down, the cable car is nice and slow takes you to the bus, the bus takes you to Catania center ....
