Zia Elvira — Restaurant in Reggio Calabria

We went in here for a nice meal. We were not warmly welcomed but nothing else was open in the area so we continued. The menu has an English and italian side and pictures. The pictures showed two very similar dishes with no translation so, as tourists, we used our translation app which translates photos (we have been using this throughout the trip). Immediately he screamed “no photos, no photos!!” And i said “oh sorry! Its just a translation app” and he repeated himself AT LEAST 10 times in a hostile tone. I felt like im in a jail and broke some rule. I tried to constantly explain that its an app, and i can show him i took no photos. He said “any question you have, you ask me”. But he couldn’t answer our question.

After that, he took our order, with lots of hostility. We felt so stressed, rigid and unwelcome so we just left.

This is a very small mentality. Even if i took a photo, it would only bring you more business. This isn’t the first fancy seafood restaurant in Italy. Weve been to plenty of nice seafood restaurants with the same dishes as here…

Arrived before they were open as we saw it just passing by but they still allowed us in with open arms. Showed us the fresh fish before they started preparing it creating a truly amazing experience. Amazing portion sizes and beautiful fish. You can see the owner has passion. The decor creates a special atmosphere of home. Vintage items decorate the walls the owner took the time to show us all of his prized possessions. He was extremely generous and we had a night filled with laughter and smiles. È sempre bello scoprire locali come " Zia Elvira" nella provincia d'appartenenza, a volte visitando tanti luoghi si danno per scontate le eccellenze territoriali. Il Ristorantino è davvero molto ben curato, semplice ed evoca l'atmosfera di tempi passati, l'arredamento ti riporta alle calde case delle zie e delle nonne , un focolare sicuro dove rifocillarsi. Il menù è prettamente rivolto a chi ama la tradizione e l'innovazione che accumuna la buona cucina di pesce. Si rinnova giorno dopo giorno, perché le materie prime arrivano direttamente dal mare e ci si affida al pescato di giornata, il personale preparato e gentile illustra e descrive ogni piatto per soddisfare tutti i palati. Buoni gli antipasti che seppur tradizionali,aprono l'appetito per tutto il resto. La fritturina di paranza è leggera , gustosa ,cucinata molto bene, la pepata di cozze,può essere sia bianca che con un pizzico di pomodorino, che consiglio con un buon vino d' accompagnamento, le cozze sono freschissime e cucinate con semplicità, senza mascherare il sapore del pesce con troppi condimenti...lo scorfano e la gallinella in umido ristorano il palato! Consiglio il dessert della casa, con mandorle e granella di pistacchio per finire un'ottima cena! Avrei voluto gustare altri piatti ,ma il tempo non è andato a nostro favore, sicuramente la prossima volta che ci ritorneremo ( perché è ovvio che ritorneremo) assaggeremo il resto del menù, perchè ne vale davvero la pena.
