A serendipitous, spectacular find. We stopped in Roccastrada on spec, spotting its small collection of hillside buildings from the road below and hoping to find a restroom amongst them. Our quest for a bathroom led us to Picio Matto, the only restaurant open at midday in this small town. We entered intending to buy two espresso dopios and a bottle of acqua frizzante. However, the delightful interior, incredibly friendly and homely hosts, cute cat and enticing menu kept us there for well over an hour. The food was undoubtedly the best of our trip in Tuscany, and we are a lot of excellent meals. Ingredients were top quality. The herbs were picked fresh from the plants beside our table. We tried the ‘surprise’ Picio Matto which had the freshest black truffle we’d tasted, and ricotta and spinach stuffed tortelli. Both were perfect. The chicory and beans we enjoyed on the side were fresh, flavoursome and very well cooked. All of the above was enjoyed on a breezy and beautiful covered terrace. There is something very special about finding the best food and service when it is...

A very magical place, great quality of all ingredients!

We were lucky they gave us a table just in front of the fireplace.

The chef is the owner and makes his food with love.

We had of course "Pici" a typical pasta like a thick udon noodle (handmade with gourmet flours type here) are a must to try.

We ordered: Pici with radicchio and speck and the surprise one, cinta senese and steak tartare with black truffle and fennel carpaccio; all paired with a very nice red wine: SanGiovese bio and locally produced which is also their house red.

Thank you you, you offered us a magical dinner your love for what you cook was in our dinner !

We will be back when in the...

I have traveled through Italy from Cortina D Ampezzo in the north and Taormina all the way down south of Siciliy but this restaurant serves one if the best pastas I have ever eat in all of Italy. Atmosfere is wonderfull, located in a town where tourists usually dont go. But town of Roccastrada and Picio Matto are the true heart of Tuscany. All the meals are made from local&organic supllies, the dishes are just enough and prices are reasonable. Lets say that I eat in couple of Michelin star restaurant and It I would award Picio Matto a one star. If you are passing through Tuscany come here for some true Italian experiance.

Unbelievably delicious! Homemade pasta - pici - is a must to try because you can not find anything even close to it in the whole region! We had Pici with truffles and the one with Pecorino - we still remember the taste! But before coming it’s worth to call and check the opening time because we didn’t succeed when we stopped there for the second time - they had a problem with their kitchen(
