Dinner at La Sosta del Cavaliere – playfulness and elegance.
Our two-person dinner was immediately of to a great start with a piece of homemade bread and a "butter" of cinta senese lardo with rosemary. The appetiser was followed by three of amuses bouche that were laid out in front of us. The atmosphere in the restaurant is modern and open, and the service is friendly, pleasant and welcoming.
The seven course tasting menu is a celebration of the best ingrediënts Italy, and specifically Tuscany has to offer. With flair, chef Leonardo Fiorenzani offers an entirely fresh look on the ingrediënts of all the classical dishes. By creating unexpected flavour combinations, each course is both surprising and visually stunning. The Tuscan classic Chianina (of bistecca fiorentina fame) for example is used for a bresaola, paired with capers, tomato, and surprisingly: strawberries. Classical French combinations are seized and receive the Tuscan treatment. Duck a l'orange but make it tricorni pasta with mint, wormwood leaves and hazelnuts. Even mallard with chocolate sauce is drawn into Italy, replacing the chocolate by Sicilian grown carruba.
An additional wine pairing by sommelier Michela Bigio offers an additional, Tuscan layer to the menu. At two price points (60 and 80 euro for the 7 course menu), the wine pairing is both very reasonably priced and an enrichment to the dishes. Aside from the wines, several dishes do also come with their own paired drink (a tea, a combucha, and a craft beer).

Read moreThe Sosta del Cavaliere is a high-end gourmet experience. It is ambitious but not pretentious: the service is friendly and personal but efficient and correct at the same time. Regarding the food, it is as close to perfect as could be. We were delighted that they were able to adapt almost the entire menu to gluten-free. The pasta looked and tasted home-made and the desserts were great. We both had the duck breasts for main, which were just the right shade of pink.
Altogether a great meal and thanks to Leonardo and his staff. On the list for a repeat visit whenever we are...
