This restaurant is in Monteluco, in the hills above Spoleto. It is reachable by car or by a 45 minute - 1 hour hike up 500 from the castle at Spoleto. The trail is very nice, but it is rocky and there is a 500 meter altitude gain, so wear your boots. We were there for a late lunch on a beautiful September Sunday, and we're lucky to get an outside table without reservations because the place was full of people who had driven, hiked or ridden horses up for a big Sunday lunch. The staff was overwhelmed since it appeared that everyone had arrived at the same time, so it took a very long time before we were even able to order, but we were outside on a shaded terrace on a sunny day, so that was OK. And once the process got going it was very efficient. We both had an excellent mixed salad and a pasta dish followed by an expresso, but other people were very happily tucking into huge 4 course meals with lots of side dishes. The menu was fairly simple, but quite extensive and, in our experience, very good. It would be hard to beat this experience...eating a good meal outside on a pretty terrace on a warm sunny day. Including a very big beer, a 1/4 pitcher of wine and a liter of mineral water, our bill came to €32....

Read moreAfter staying nearly 2 months in Spoleto, I've decided Hotel Ferretti is one of my favorite places. I have hiked the mountain 6 or more times, and 4 of those times we ate here. Maybe it's the altitude, maybe it's the intense hike before, or the beautiful sacred forest... but each time I've been impressed with the food, atmosphere, service, and prices. The pizza (I keep getting the Calabra) and homemade pasta (the truffle gnocchi is great comfort food) is perfect, and cheaper than anything under the mountain. I've not tried the 3 course meal, but it's been cool watching the server cook the steaks and sausages over the open fire. ||If you plan on hiking or driving up Montelucco, I would definitely recommend stopping here for a meal. I'll certainly miss it...
