In summary, beyond disappointing and not what you would expect from any average restaurant, especially one with a Michelin star. Basic service and average food, at best. There are most definitely much better ways to spend your money and time. Perhaps it was an off night, but I have never seen an off night this bad.
I do not want to dwell too much time on a very disappointing experience. We have dined our fair share at very good restaurants and this was our second visit at Dattillo, therefore we have a good understanding of what a good experience should be, especially at this price point. Perhaps the stale bread (hardest piece of bread I have ever eaten in my life, which was definitely re-heated and made on a previous day) was a big warning of the challenging night to follow. The rest of the food was pleasant, but not standout by any means, and the last two dishes had something wrong with them (spoiled ingredient or extremely imbalanced flavours). The service was also not standout, and sometimes reminded us of Fawlty Towers. On a very small positive note, the olive oil foam to enjoy with the bread was a nice touch, while the venue is also very nice.
The highlight of the bad experience was the chef (and owner of the restaurant), who explained to us that our palates were not sophisticated enough to appreciate the strong flavours of the final aubergine dish, which normally is part of the longer menu. Four out of six people on the table confirmed that all three components of the dish (aubergine, toast and sorbet) were inedible (extremely sour), which cannot be a question of different taste, especially when the squash pasta also had a similar taste profile. Sometimes it is possible for something to go wrong in the kitchen and create a dish (or two) that may not meet your expectations. The very least you can do is be...
Read moreDattilo is a family owned lovingly run agriturismo bought by Roberto Ceraudo in 1972 but it has been a farm since the 17th century. The old estate house, the small church and other buildings have been restored. Roberto, now in his 70s, is there every day hands on with all details of running his vineyard, olive, and citrus groves. His daughters, one the chef in the Michelin star restaurant and the other the operations administrator, are ever present. We had a spacious small apartment in a restored space in one of the estate buildings with a terrace that overlooked the pool and garden. Very quiet since we were the only ones who ever used the pool. Roberto gave us a personal tour of the estate one afternoon. We rode on the back of his tractor up the hills and down again as he pulled old variety pears off one of his trees and handed them to us to eat, explained the varieties of grapes, his "open air museum" as he calls his 17th century olive grove, the citrus grove, and his "white house" as he calls the small house he built for himself. His daughter Suzy gave us a tour of the cantina the morning we left. We ordered his excellent wines at dinner at the equally fabulous restaurant. This is Calabrian hospitality...
