Enoteca Dell'Orcia — Restaurant in Unione dei Comuni Amiata Val d'Orcia

Even after you have visited Tuscany several times, you can find another town so authentic that you wonder: how did we miss this one? Castiglione d'Orcia is that kind of town. A tour guide/friend recommended it highly as unspoiled with amazing views. It was so special that during our recent stay in Montepulciano we visited this lovely town three times. On our first visit, after visiting the nearby La Rocca (tower/castle) we wandered into town to find a lovely outdoor restaurant--Enoteca dell'Orcia--on a small square with a fountain. The views over the countryside were spectacular. Our first meal was simple: two soups (tomato and pea), both flavorful with excellent bread, two salads (pear/walnuts/Pecorino and tuna/arugula/tomato) with wine, water, cake and coffee. On our return we had abundant boards of cheese and meats with wine, water and Panna Cotta. Our final visit included a visit to the town's tiny museum, part of Siena's system of medieval art. Our meal was again simple: rabbit and tripe (a first!). One of the highlights of this simple but excellent Enoteca is its server and somellier, Giorgio. Each time he steered us to excellent wines to accompany our meals. He was born in Castiglione, lives here and offers an apartment in town. His service was knowledgeable, friendly and first class. This wine bar is in a great location, with a shaded outdoor table area in a delightful piazza, with good views of the surrounding countryside. Stopped here for mid-morning coffee, which was very good and reasonably priced. They also had a large selection of food and wines. Siamo stati a cena in sei persone in questo locale e siamo rimasti delusi. In primo luogo ci hanno rilegato in un tavolo a dir poco instabile, al punto che perfino i bicchieri erano continuamente a rischio caduta. Giunto il momento di ordinare, credevamo di essere stati sufficientemente chiari nel chiedere sei taglieri. Ed invece, stranamente, ne sono stati portati soltanto tre, con la giustificazione che tanto erano divisibili per due persone. Stessa cosa è accaduto con le salsicce. Anche in questo caso hanno portate soltanto tre divise in tanti pezzetti, neanche stessiamo facendo un aperitivo. Abbiamo ordinato una bottiglia di vino bianco ed una seconda successiva, dello stesso tipo. Curiosamente, la seconda bottiglia che è stata portata al tavolo era diversa dalla prima. Inesattezze, imprecisioni insomma, a fronte delle quali abbiamo chiesto spiegazioni al titolare, il quale, con aria superiore e con la mano in tasca, ci ha liquidato senza nessuna cura. Gran finale con la moglie del titolare la quale , ad un certo punto della cena , ci ha informati che il nostro tavolo era già riservato e che di lì a breve sarebbe stato necessario liberarlo, costringendoci , di fatto, ad alzarci.
