Overall - terrible service. If I could rate lower than 1 star I would.
My wife and I waited for 30min after sticking us in the very back so cleverly named "the garden" (spoiler: no actual garden only tables and chairs placed outside behind the restaurant in a secluded area). Staff kept saying "one moment one moment" but that moment never came. They sat 5 more tables within that time. Not once did they come to check on us or to take even a drink order. To add insult to injury, "the garden" is next to the kitchen where waiters enter and exit with food. Not a single one made eye contact with us.
We left without ordering.
Point-of-note: Interestingly, before the staff sat us, the waiter asked us if we spoke Italian (despite my name, my wife and I are both asian ethnically). I said we didn't, and he said "but you are in Italy" in a disapproving tone. I noticed that everyone they sat with us were foreigners, including asian. Not a single local Italian table. I could tell because I could hear the language people were speaking.
Instead we went to Trattoria Osenna - and fortunately we got a nice table INSIDE. The staff were very helpful from the beginning and quite kind. Our waiters spoke very good English and kept checking on us despite being a full house. This restaurant is on the main street while Al Vecchio Forno is 3 rows back - not sure if this is an indication of success, but if it is, then it shows. My wife and I had a fantastic meal at Osenna and highly...
Read moreThis is a very mixed review. The place was very promising. From the first minute, we fell in love with the place. It is a very very charming garden, and the atmosphere is great. As we entered we were given a glass of cava. The food around us looked great. The first course was really good, goat cheese with truffles. My wife's ravioli was good. But.. my pork steak had a... Maggot in it! It was alive and moving in my plate. My dish was immediately replaced by another (i chose something different cause i couldn't order the same thing), but... That's it. Nothing more. Not an official apology, not something as a compensation. We even had a dessert, but nothing was "on the house". Also, the garden is full of flying insects, so the whole meal was a fight.
In the end, we paid for everything, including "coperto" (2.5 * 2).
One of the weirdest meals I've ever had, cause i was having so much fun, but the total experience had a lot of problems.
From a 5 star review, it dropped to 3, and that's cause...
Read moreI haven't had one bad dish from this place; I love it here! The staff are all terrific, polite and professional. And the wine list is pretty darn good.
The wild boar stew with a side of the oven roasted potatoes is a legendary combo. The stew however was not quite a stew so I'm thinking the translation was a bit off. It was more of a wild boar in a generous amount of sauce. Still, very good. Just make sure to keep your bites of meat on the small side to let the sauce work it's magic and not let the meat seem dry. The Pici with cacio and pepe was good; very flavorful but not too salty. The gnocchi was good but more on the mild side. I enjoyed it but ordering this dish should really depend on the mood you're in.
For desserts we tried the Panna Cotta, Chocolate Ganache, and another I can't remember the name of. All were delicious but I think I'd recommend the Panna Cotta with strawberries the most.
