If you happen to be in the vicinity of Merano in Alto-Adige, then you have to make the effort to go to Castelbello-Ciardes to Kuppelrain restaurant. This address is a must for any true lover of incredible food and wine, all of it local. We found the restaurant this morning on internet and discovered it at lunch on the first day of a road trip in Italy. Absolutely fantastic quality and superlative creativity - cacao pasta with local cheese sauce and black truffle - seriously? The whole family exudes talent. Father and son (21 years old) are Michelin star chefs and so is the mother, as the restaurant’s sommelier. One of the daughters is the chef pâtissier. Deserts were indescribably good. Excellent deep dive into wines from Alto-Agide, way beyond the big and well-known names, but with equal quality. It is getting harder and harder to surprise us, but I can tell you that this restaurant blew our socks off and we “just” had the bistro menu, as the gastronomic menu is only on offer in the evening. Added bonus - these are seriously nice people, the kind that you want to sit down with and talk with about food and wine for hours on...

Wow! What an experience!

We went for the three-course lunch, and it was absolutely worth it. The service was exceptional — everyone was incredibly kind and welcoming. You could really feel the warmth of the place.

The lunch itself felt like a delicious preview of the Michelin-starred evening menu. The restaurant is family-run, and you can sense the love and pride in every detail. The mother, father, and daughter take care of the service, while the son is the talented head chef in the kitchen.

The mother, an award-winning sommelier from Italy, served us wines that were nothing short of outstanding. Each glass perfectly complemented the food and added to the overall experience.

The food was simply divine, and I have to give special praise to the desserts, crafted by the daughter. The tiramisu and panna cotta were some of the best I’ve had — even compared to what I’ve tasted in Italy.

A beautiful, heartfelt dining experience that I would...

We stumbled on this absolute gem by accident while driving through the region and it’s the kind of place where you quickly realise that you’re sitting in a family run place. Except, this family is no ordinary one, they’re Michelin all the way!

The cooking is some of the best I’ve ever tasted and it equals (if not beats!) the top restaurants in London. (Discipline and generosity - how can a plate of venison taste like that? Soooo good!)

The wine was gorgeous from the local area while service was done with care and professionalism . After the savouries, Natalie’s sweets counter was the sort of end to a meal that we usually just dream about. The cherry cake, the marzipan and OMG the coffee cake! Believe you me that it’s worth the trip. It’s 100% amazing! Ps: I cant...

We are travellers from Hong Kong and had a unique and unforgettable experience at Kuppelrain. We stayed two nights and had their signature wine pairing dinner. We wholeheartedly recommend this place - especially for overseas travellers looking for an authentic, elevated experience. Stay the night if you can! The wine selection, the food, the chocolate, the breakfast - everything was exceptional. Thank you, Family Trafoier!
