My only regret is that I do not live close to the restaurant to eat there once a week. There is great hesitation to tell you about the good food, fair prices, decent service, or that they fulfill your order the way you want because that will mean more patrons.
A chill place with the typical Jamaican restaurant decor that you just have to accept. Why West Indian restaurants gravitate to the dark and gloomy decor I'll never understand. Still, The food was hot, not overly seasoned so your tongue goes numb and appealing to the senses. I wish I could bottle the curried goat smell and open it when I am homesick.
I was expecting surly waitstaff because this is Jamdown but the people they hire look and move like they've experienced joy in their life. Our waitress wasn't patronizing and explained things like rice to us. She gave us tap water when we asked for it. Some places tell you they only have bottled water and you have to buy it.
She brought the food to the table at the same time. I want to let that sink in. We got food at the same time and the dishes were piping hot. I wished she had also brought out silverware but it's a small price for how great the food was. I met the chefs and told them how much I appreciated their efforts. The big plus for when you eat here --when you order a side of anything like say, plantains, expect a good portion. They also seem to use local goats and chickens they raise themselves. As the Tik Tokkers say, "10 out of 10;...
Read moreSweet Spice is renowned for great tasting, authentic jamaican cuisine to which I can attest to. On this occasion however I went for dinner at approximately 8 PM, a party of three. Upon entering, we were not greeted as is customary. Three tables were occupied and all the rest were dirty. Some even had used dishes and utensils. After standing there for about 3 - 5 minutes a server appeared and told us you can sit wherever you want to. We told her all tables were dirty. She apologized, cleaned a table and we sat down. She returned with the menu, left again and came back shortly thereafter to take our orders. When we began ordering, she said let me go find out if we have any left. Apparently they didn't have whatever we were ordering. Having been a hospitality manager, I would have thought she would have verified with the kitchen, their availability on the menu, prior to taking orders. We left disappointed and without our meals as this type of service was subpar to what's normally...
Read moreSweet Spice is a Negril tradition. It is one of the only totally enclosed inside restaurants in Negril. It is a Jamaican restaurant owned by a family who has been serving great consistent tasty food for years. They do not serve any alcohol but patrons are welcome to bring their own. The food is cooked to order so depending on how busy it is it can take a while. But the food is well worth the wait! I always order the conch chop suey, something not really on the menu but they accommodate my order because the offer other chop suey items. Dinner is served with a lovely fish or chicken broth which just opens up the appetite for the amazing flavours that are about to be served. I have friends who LOVE the barbecued fried chicken. They say it's the best chicken dish in the world. Pricing is medium plus but the home cooked flavours and the pleasant atmosphere makes it definitely worth the price. Make Sweet Spice a definite stop when u are in Negril. You will not be...
